HOME TOWN HEROES
PRESENTATION
Chris Blais introduced Ron and Helena Collen as Kiwanis Home Town Heroes. Ron has been a Board member of the Pop Warner Football Program for 8 years, president for 7 years, and has coached at two different levels, (Flag & Mitey-Mites). Ron & Helena are co-chairs for the AP Booster Club, and their efforts have given hundreds of local children the opportunity to participate in constructive, team-oriented, youth development programs. Chris and Pres Joe presented the Collens with their certificates of recognition of service to the community. Congratulations and our thanks for your services!
(Chris - on right - listens as President Joe reads the wording of the certificate to Ron and Helena)
PROGRAM
Frank Breselor introduced Lawrence Howard, a
local attorney who has been a city planner and now practices from an office in
Averill Park. He lives in Taborton with his family, and has been working with
the town on its Master Plan, copies of which are available at the Town Clerk’s
office. Mr. Howard distributed an illustrated brochure on “The Comprehensive
Plan”. The “Blueprint For Action” has four volunteer committees: Economic
Development, Environment, Mining, and Oversight. Concern is for multiple
dwelling units and single-family homes. The Plan is based on recommendations
and feedback from citizens of the town. There are several difficult areas:
Ackner Propane Storage & Former Town Garage Building at Holcomb Rd & Eastern
Union Tpke; WSL Mining Area in hamlet (Troy Sand & Gravel); Faith Mills
buildings on Burden Lake Rd; and the WSL Four Corners area (RiteAid building
application & abandoned Mobil Station). The Zoning Board makes the final
decisions, but they should heed the recommendations of the Plan, which calls
for denser hamlets rather than “highway strip development”. A public water
supply may be needed in future. The town has no control over the widening of
the roads (state & county jurisdiction), but can plan for sidewalks in the
hamlets. Certain types of businesses such as residential/professional can be
permitted along highways, as long as not retail that need parking lots, and
the buildings still look like homes. The town’s tax base needs industry for
relief, but nobody wants it nearby! There are no immediate plans for sewer
expansion; hamlets and lakes are presently covered. Abandoned property
(Mobil?) is the responsibility of the owner, but some pressure can be
applied. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings of the
Master Plan Committee, which are held at 7 PM on the 4th Tuesdays
of the month at the Town Hall. Opportunities to speak are before and after
the meeting.
Our Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Mr. Howard by Bryce Cutler.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Chris, for the presence of Ron & Helena, and for Jim Stacy!
$ Botsy, for all our veterans on this holiday!
$ Barb, for the great turnout for our Trashbusters event, and for the Kiwanis fundraising trip to Italy that we are going on next week!
$ Brownrigg: Had a great trip to Utah, and Suzanne is still with me! Also drove to NYC on a sales trip, and used NO gas! {No explanation offered for either of these comments!} Please quote me correctly: “I donated to a certain Marine member of SLK the north end of a south bound water buffalo, and I want to know when we get a program on his trip to Vietnam!” {No explanation for this either!}
$ Dale Hall, for the 5 ½ (a small child) Key Clubbers who stacked all my firewood in an hour! I will make a substantial donation to their treasury!
$ Bob Loveridge, for the Happiest Table at the North Greenbush Charter Night! They dared me to do the craziest things, like fly paper airplanes up to the head table! Here’s $10, one for each person at that table!
$ Jeremy, for coming safely home from Korea, and for the one living WWI vet left in town!
$ Booker: From LG Gale Leva, for the 10 SLKs who supported the Governor’s visit!
From me, for our club’s great support for North Greenbush’s Charter Night! Also, when I delivered the groceries to Botsy’s, a customer asked if I was his son!
$ John Glasser: I won re-election!
$ Sarah, for my Dad’s joining the Club! Also, it hurts to hear Millers referred to as Hannaford's, but I guess I'll get used to it!
$ Pres Joe, for SLK giving $500 worth of gifts for the NG Charter Night. And I even won a prize……..a gift certificate for a haircut from Botsy!!! So wait til you see me next week!
$ Gary: My son from DC got home from Israel, safely!!
$ Bill Whipple: On Nov 6th our granddaughter celebrated her 6th birthday, and on Nov 10th our daughter Jennifer was married, with the whole family in town and attending!
DOOR PRIZE, provided by Frank Breselor, was won by Botsy!
50/50 for $31 was won by Tim Murdick!
MEGA 50/50 wins again! The best efforts of Jeremy Vosburgh could not access that elusive King of (Kiwanis) Clubs that would have awarded him $236.10. He picked a King, but the wrong one-- the King of Diamonds—from the 35 cards left!
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING: A brief meeting was called to vote on the membership application of Tim Murdick: Approved.
NEXT WEEK PROGRAM: Past Pres Bob Loveridge, with a surprise!
