PROGRAM
Chair Gary Meislin introduced our own Joe Cybulski, who gave a slide illustrated talk about his recent 10-day trip to Poland with his brother, to trace their family heritage. They found evidence of many people named Cybulski, but were not sure if they were related. Neither of them spoke much Polish, but found the people to be very friendly and most helpful. The language barrier was overcome because, like much of Europe, most of the people were able to speak some English. Joe and his brother left New York on 9/11/06 and flew to Warsaw via Dublin. Warsaw had been completely destroyed by World War II, but a massive rebuilding program has taken place, and many edifices were rebuilt almost as they were originally. The pictures were beautiful, but many were horizontal instead of vertical, much to Joe’s consternation, and the club’s amusement. When a remark was made about the cleanliness of the city, a comment was heard that when the city was turned sideways, all the dirt fell out! The statues of Copernicus the scientist and Adam Moskowitzki, the poet of Poland, were amazingly cantilevered on tiny pivot points! The next city visited was Krakow, home of 12 universities, relatively untouched by the war, and its centuries-old buildings and monuments were the originals. They traveled outside the city to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, a sobering reminder of man’s capacity for cruelty. The former Pope John Paul II was Bishop of Krakow before he was elevated to the papacy. At the Monastery of Jasna Gora, they were able to attend mass in the cathedral housing the Icon of the Black Madonna, the site of many miracles, attested to by the hundreds of crutches left behind. Before leaving Poland they visited the home of Anne Frank. Despite the tilted pictures, which were most likely the work of Halloween goblins, since Joe insisted that all were fine just a few hours ago, it was a very interesting program. Thanks, Joe!
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Joe Cub: Very happy to have been able to go to Poland to research my ancestry!
$ Jim Rogers: For a tremendous program!
$ John Brownrigg: Accompanied Suzanne to her conference in Washington, DC, and was able to tour the monuments at night—fabulous! Had a very emotional experience seeing The Wall for the first time, and recognizing names.
$ Scott Paul: Attended the 50th Anniversary party of the Troy Seniors, and heard Joe Cub do an amazing rendition of Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York! Fantastic!
$ Joe Behson: I’ve got another new fun job—teaching tennis at George Washington School!
$ Barb Fioravanti: Presented the mascot Hiway Rat to Columbia’s Key Club for finding the most impressive “trophy” while picking trash along Rt 351, and impressed upon them their responsibility of keeping it safe while they have it!
$ Pablo Martinez: $50 Happy Dollars for the Halloween Bash at JavaNet Beanery! 100 kids had a great time, and won some cash prizes! Wow!
$ Ken Noland: I got my truck back! Now I carefully watch out for little old ladies! And I’ve learned to really appreciate my OWN vehicle!
$ Gary Meislin: Before WWII, there was a play about Golub, the protector of the Jewish population. The people waited for him to come alive and save them, but ………. The story came to the US in the 1930s, when 2 Jews transformed him into Superman! But it wasn’t popular, so they sold the rights for very little, and now of course it’s very popular! And by the way, the originator of Batman was Jewish, too. Batman and Rabbi? From the audience!
DOOR PRIZE provided by Gary, was won by Chet Melius! Drink it in good health!
50/50 for $25 was won by Kathy Evensen!
MEGA 50/50 triumphed again! Jerry Tysiak couldn’t do better than the 3 of Hearts from among the 44 remaining cards, so tonight’s $125 will grow again next week!
