PROGRAM

Joe Cybulski, listed all the candidates for election next month, and then introduced Martin Reid, candidate for Assembly.  The only other candidate who responded to our invitation, Kirsten Gillibrand, candidate for Congress, stayed for a few minutes, speaking to members before the meeting.   Martin is a native of the Town of Sand Lake and Averill Park schools.  He described his very large district as a “big circle around the Hudson River” including parts of many counties.  Rensselaer County has presented a very large budget increase of 25%.  Martin’s goal is to lower taxes by wiser spending of tax dollars.  The county has 181 Level 3 Sex Predators.  He would propose that Levels 2 & 3 submit to lifetime monitoring, and perhaps lifetime confinement for some Level 3 offenders.  He also felt that many school budgets pass because people fear that contingency budgets will eliminate valuable programs, and he would like to revamp the procedures.  The state lottery DOES buy all books for NY students, but it should do much more for our schools.  During a Q&A period, long-term care insurance was discussed, and its value stressed.  Since LTCI helps save the government money, it should be given tax incentives.  (Joe Cub inserted that his County Dept of the Aging has much information on this subject).  Many members noted personal experiences, which illustrated the need for this insurance.  Nursing home costs run up to $10,000 per week!  We were advised to consult an elder law attorney.  Reid wants to expand the state bottle bill, and has already introduced such a bill in the county legislature.  He was receptive to the request to initiate the ignition interlock for second offender DWIs, at the judge’s discretion but preferably by mandate, and stated that it needed a source of funding.  Joe thanked Martin for coming and speaking to SLK.

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Pablo:  Glad Armand was able to come tonight.  Thanks to Chris Blais for attending his Sat Game Day (RISK) for the benefit of the Key Club.  And also for his being able to purchase a mixer board for half price.  He will loan this to the SummerFest bands.  Thanks, Pablo!

$       Jim Rogers for his friend Eberhard:  He was happy to meet SLKs at last meeting.  Had a great time on the trip to Maine, and he won the Rummy Cube games 3 times!

$       Jim Rogers for himself:  Thanks to Chet for the loan of his large screen so they could watch slides of hiking in the Alps in 1976 and 1987.  They later learned that a large bear had invaded the back yard, destroying all his bird feeders.  Eberhard’s grandson plays for the German National soccer team that won in Portugal.  And also for his accepting Lt Gov Kileen Davies’ request to become Van Rensselaer Division’s PR Chair!

$       Botsy:  Had a great time working in the Food Trailer with his wife Tina.  Proud to announce that his son is joining him in the barbering business!

$       Bob Reiter:  Following the death of his mother-in-law, he drove her sister home to Florida, where his friend Tom Hoffay, now living in The Villages, treated him to a round of golf—here’s to Aunt Charlotte!

$       Bryce Cutler:  I am now the proud owner, but unhappy taxpayer, of a home in the APSD!  And also for my good friends, Kelly and Chris!

$       Chris Blais:  Thank you for the very nice get well card while he was ill, and happy to see his old friend Armand here!

DOOR PRIZE, a bottle of wine, with ID charms, provided by Joe Cub, was won by Joe Behson!

50/50 for $28, won by Ken Noland, who gave it to Martin Reid to help buy gas for campaigning!
