Ø Pres Joe presented IPP Bob with the Past President’s plaque -- job well done!
PROGRAM
Sarah Tripp
introduced her boss, Kevin Smith, to speak on the implications to the
community of the sale of Millers Market to
the Hannaford Corporation, which
has pursued this transaction for some time. Kevin was reluctant to give
up this store, but research into the costs inherent in the addition of a
pharmacy,
a feature that has become almost necessary to meet the competition, showed the
need for about $1 million, a prohibitive amount. Renovations to an
already small store, the high salaries for registered pharmacists, plus the
delays in payment for drugs from insurance companies account for the large
amount, prohibitive for an individual owner.
Hannaford will also buy the Voorheesville store, with Kevin and Cheryl keeping the stores in Ravena and Schaghticoke. Sarah has chosen to remain with Kevin, and will become manager of the Ravena store. Kevin has stated that the new manager of Millers “WILL be a member of Sand Lake Kiwanis!” The new Rite Aid store plan has still not been approved, and while it could take quite a while, he feels it will ultimately happen. The Quillinan brothers still own the real property, and will probably rent out the present Rite Aid space to another tenant. Bryce suggested “a super-sized Key Bank with a pharmacy and groceries!” Both Kevin and Sarah will remain SLK members!
