PROGRAM

Chris Blais
introduced his sister Deb Cavanaugh, who has been studying, playing and
singing folk music for more than 15 years, and has performed with Arlo Guthrie
and Pete Seeger. She explained that folk music is “music that has been handed
down orally through the generations of family and personal connections.” Rap
is folk music, whether we, or the kids, care to admit it! Folk music tells
stories of life situations at the time. There are work songs, such as sea
shanties sung first by river sailors, then by ocean sailors, and coal miners’
songs, that helped lift their spirits and provided rhythm to work. In a clear
sweet voice, Deb sang Shenandoah (the background music for this page), and Working on the Railroad,
with the mandolin, and then historical songs, such as Erie Canal, Sweet
Betsy From Pike, and Follow The Drinking Gourd (Big Dipper), about
slaves fleeing north. In 1897 there was a tragic mill fire killing over 300
women in Fall River, MA, similar to the infamous Triangle Factory fire in NYC,
and from it came the song Granite Mills. Deb demonstrated and
explained that the mountain dulcimer and the banjo are the only true American
instruments, and the limberjack came from the same area. Many folk songs tell
sad stories, but many are just plain fun, like Shady Grove, and Old
Joe Clark, which was from the late 1800s, about a real moonshiner and
gambler, and was accompanied on the limberjack (a carved wooden percussion
instrument also know as the "dancing man") also known as the . Jim Rogers
thanked Deb for a most entertaining program, and presented her with our
Certificate of Appreciation.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Jim Rogers: Thanks to Deb for a wonderful program! My granddaughter celebrated her 8th birthday. Had a great 3 days in Plymouth, MA with the best weather ever! Also, for the first time in 6 years, I weigh less than 200 lbs! And thanks to Botsy for cutting my hair even though he was really closed!
$ Ken James: I’m still walking around! Just got a clean bill of health from my doctors!
$ Jim Colabelli: Showed pictures of granddaughter from sonogram to present! {Pretty kid, but is this going to be a monthly event?} Had a great time at the EX in MA! And my truck is now complete {with a baby seat?} It’s a 3-ball truck {deleted!} and can haul the food trailer!
$ Chris, for my sister’s performance! It’s great to have Robin here with me—she pays! And I’m back coaching girls’ volleyball at APHS!
$ KVP: Older grandson’s car adventures had a safe 3 weeks, and having played soccer since he was 6, he made varsity goalie, and had 3 shut outs! The younger grandson plays football for Hoosick Valley, a small school, but he scored 2 TDs against Coxackie-Athens, and the team won the game! Now, about the Yankees—they’re only 2 games behind—BEWARE! We just returned from 10 days of perfect weather on the Rhode Island beach!
$ Dick Johnsen: Gave a Hong Kong $20 (worth ??) Spent 9 ½ days in Beijing, saw a “pippa” (a Chinese instrument). The flight from Hong Kong to Chicago seemed like 3 weeks!
$ Dale Hall: Something about Goodnight Irene and a rat in a hospital that turned out to be a Chihuahua puppy! {I’m confused—ED}
$ Fred Wurtemberger: Spent a weekend on Cape Cod and had a date with a 6’6” transvestite, a tall story! Got a phone call Sunday night from Betsy from Shady Grove. {Now I’m REALLY confused!—ED} {Lots more deleted comments!}
$ Jerry Tysiak: Thanks to all who provided programs during the past year, and one of the best was Deb’s tonight!
$ Booker: the birds above favor my usual parking spot, making frequent trips to the car wash necessary, so I moved to a different place. Next morning, a VERY LARGE tree limb fell on the original place—so thanks, birds!
$ Pres Bob: This is my last official meeting—I’ve cried a lot about it, too! It has been fun all year, thanks to everyone who helped. Here’s to another great year!
DOOR PRIZE, 2 tickets to any event at SCLA provided by Chris, was won by Ken James! {Fred can get you a date if you’d like, Ken!}
50/50 for $23 was won by Pres Bob, who donated it to Deb Cavanaugh’s folk music group!
MEGA 50/50 will keep growing! Jim Colabelli COULD have won the unusual sum of $159.10 IF he had found the King of Clubs from the 40 cards left, BUT he picked the 10 of Diamonds instead!
NEXT WEEK PROGRAM: Incoming President Joe Behson presents an evening of festivity!
OCTOBER 1 Members & guests will enjoy cocktails & hors d’oeuvres at 6, dinner at 7, then
