PROGRAM

Pres Bob introduced long time member Doug Baldrey who gave a talk about the Energy Use and Trends in New York State.  It is common knowledge that we are tremendous users of energy, and this is increasing, rather than decreasing.  Those of us who are 55 or older grew up with only one bathroom, 2-3 bedrooms, most with central heat but no central air conditioning, one car, one TV.  Today’s kids may each have their own TV &/or computer in their own bedroom, (sometimes their own bathroom), in homes with family rooms &/or home theaters, window air conditioners if not central, snowmobiles &/or ATVs &/or boats, plus an assortment of computer games, cell phones, and other electronic toys!  Obviously, our energy consumption rises.  NYS is the 4th largest energy-consuming state, using 4.8% of US energy for 6.5% of the population, but is the 2nd most energy-efficient state.  Residential use accounts for 27% of NY’s total energy use, compared to 18% nationally, and NY’s reliance on foreign oil sources is 90%, compared to 67% nationally.  The most energy is used to produce electricity, so the figures for the last decade are alarming.  Heating degree-days have stayed the same, but cooling degree-days have risen dramatically.  Oil, coal, and gas produce our heat, but cooling requires electricity.  Prices keep rising, more rapidly in the last few years, especially with gasoline, which the average person sees daily.  We are energy guzzlers—we use our cars for everything, especially in suburbia, without a practical mass transit system.  NY’s expenditure has doubled since 1990.  Wind and solar systems have not yet become competitive.  The CEO of Duke Power in NC has proposed a system by which power companies make their customers more efficient users, and receive compensation from the units of energy saved, rather than used.  It’s a complicated system, but logical, and remains to be seen if it will be accepted.  Bottom line:  the message is EFFICIENCY!

HAPPY DOLLARS

Apparently the Club wasn’t too happy this week; only Pres Bob was thankful!

$       Pres Bob, for the fantastic crew on yesterday’s Food Trailer!  We sold out everything, and took in $630!!  Knickknack, Paddywhack!!!

DOOR PRIZE, provided by Doug, was won by Joan Gross!

50/50 for $24 was won by Chet Melius!

MEGA 50/50 did it again!  Even Pres Bob, on his first ever chance at finding the King of Clubs, struck out!  He picked the Ace of Spades from the 41 remaining cards, so the $145.50 will grow!
