PROGRAM

YOUTH SERVICES CO-CHAIR Kelly Stone stated that she was honored and pleased to work with the young people in this community.  She reviewed some of the accomplishments of her committee:  sending kids to Kamp Kiwanis, Key Leader, and HOBY programs, supporting the Twin Town Little League, and providing computers to worthy but needy students.

Pres Bob explained “EVERY DAY HEROES”, part of District Governor Joe’s project, which will be continued into the next administrative year.  “Every Day Heroes” are community people who have gone out of their way to help kids, and this year SLK is awarding 3 Certificates.  The first will go to Louise Hall of Millers’ Shop & Save, who sold the most Bells of Life benefiting the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Albany Med.  Pres-Elect Joe will personally present her Certificate since she could not be present tonight.  The second and third Certificates were presented to Officers Sal Greco and Scott Dunham of the Sheriff’s Department for their outstanding work with the Explorer Post 69 Law Enforcement Unit.  On their own off-duty time these two men work with the young people on their projects, and they also work on Operation Safe Child, providing more than 7500 ID cards so far for the children of Rensselaer County, the second highest amount in New York State.  They offered the services of the youth to help with selling Christmas trees and recycling computers. Pres Bob requested the membership to consider other nominations of people who impact kids for this award, and thanked the officers for their service to youth.   Both officers received a standing ovation from the Club for their outstanding service!

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Eve, for all who helped with the Steak & Lobster Roast, especially Louise Besch, who scrubbed every pot we used!

$       Chris, for the Key Club’s efforts with recycling, and for Sal & Scott, such great role models!

$       Pres-Elect Joe, for attending the US Open (gift from son) with a special guest!  Next week I will travel to the UK and Wales, with a special guest!  And for all Dudley’s and Eve’s work to make our installation night a very special fun evening!

$       Kelly:  It’s great to be back, both here at SLK and at school.  Thanks to Sal & Scott for all their services to help our community!

$       Booker:  Someone tried to fax me over my regular phone line—it was the “do not call” line!  Also, I’m a grandfather again…another boy!

$       Skip, for Sal and Scott!

$       Pasquarelli, for all the help on the Food Trailer!

$       Mikki, for all our school personnel—we’re going to have the best year yet!

$       Brownrigg:  This year’s was the first Steak & Lobster Roast I’ve ever missed, but Suzanne wanted to go to Belmont.  It was the first time I’ve been back since my Dad redesigned it.   AND, I won 90 cents!

$       Dale, for Botsy helping me with my insurance settlement.  The bank refused to give me a cashier’s check (no account there), so Botsy did it for me!

$       Gary:  Next Sunday there will be a 2 PM theater presentation followed by a dinner at Church of the Covenant, with proceeds to benefit the Stahlman Scholarship Fund.  $18.

$       Dale, again:  My youngest son goes to Egypt next week, hopefully for only one month.

Please remember that tomorrow is 9/11, and pause to reflect on the terrible events of six years ago.

DOOR PRIZE, provided by Kelly, was won by Dale Hall!

50/50 for $25 was won by Dudley Dorr!

MEGA 50/50 could have paid Booker $131, but he picked the 3 of Spades from the 42 cards!

OLD BUSINESS

1.      Auxiliary Committee has chosen 18 Partners in Service to Kiwanis, but so far no Friends of Kiwanis.  Several groups nominated; to award a few each month with picture & article in Advertiser, Behson, Loveridge, & Brownrigg to select.

2.      Renovations to Food Trailer extensive, on time, but over budget!  Need more storage space

(cabinets), and new hot dog cooker.  Authorized up to $1000 to complete.

NEW BUSINESS

1.      Approved renewal of club software subscription.

2.      Need to change meeting place on 10/29—approved Java Beanery if open in time.

3.      Donation of $100 for use of Averill Park Fish & Game Club last week approved.

4.      No action at this time on the 4 members with unpaid dues.

5.      Donation of $165 to Intl Foundation approved—Distinguished Club requirements met.

6.      Expenditure of up to $650 approved for new sign, trailer and letters.

7.      Mikki suggested The Tosca Grill in Albany as alternative in case Java Beanery not available.  She also made a nomination for an Every Day Hero.  As part of Community Services work, cooperation with local PTAs seems logical.  Mikki volunteered to attend their meetings as an SLK representative to keep both groups “on the same page.”

DIVISION:  Next Council meeting is Sept 25th at Hoosick Falls

DISTRICT:  Walk for a Child’s Dream at Kamp Kiwanis next month

INTERNATIONAL:  Pres Curry will walk in that Dream Walk
