DISTRICT CONVENTION REPORT from Buffalo, NY
Pres Bob attended, along with Booker and Mikki McSherry, and presented House Chair Dudley with banner patches for the Governor’s Project and HOBY. PLG Jean Andrick was unsuccessful in her bid for Governor-Elect, but may try again. The SLKC veterans present at this meeting were presented with scrolls from Governor Joe.
Don Herring is the new NY District Governor, and the new Van Rensselaer Division Lt Governor is Gale Leva from Hoosick Falls. Governor’s Theme for the year is the Native American Dreamcatchers, and Gale is one of his 27 Dreamers who will work for Diversity, Retention, Education, Attitude, and Membership. Van Rensselaer was the only division to form a new club, and the Division’s Web Page was #1 in the District! AKTION Clubs are being formed in greater numbers. Next year’s International Convention will be June 25th in Orlando, FL, and the NY District Convention will be at Turning Stone Aug 6-10.

PROGRAM

George Raneri introduced Phil White, Dean of the School of Business and Technology at HVCC, the premier community college in NYS, whose goal is to fill the needs of the community. Enrollment is about 11,000 students. ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY: semi-conductors and nanotechnology—graduated first 5 students, including 2 women, this year. 14 are enrolled for next year, and more will be coming. ELECYRICAL & BUILDING TRADES: NYSERTA wants more technicians. Students need a 3.5 GPA to enter. AUTOMOTIVE: working with NYS DEC on alternative fuels, hope to have a “totally green” facility in Malta. BUSINESS: working with Price Chopper in a new supermarket management program, 4 elective courses, and online classes. Also, with Rose & Kieran, insurance training and risk management, online classes. ENTREPENEURSHIP: learning how to set up a business—develop a product, produce it, market, and accounting. The aim is Partnership with Industry to meet specific needs.
Fred Wurtemberger presented Phil with our Certificate of Appreciation, noting that many of our membership have or have had direct connections with Hudson Valley CC.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Booker: for Gale & Jean bringing down 5 folks from Hoosick Falls to our final Concert in the Park, and for Eve’s delicious lime bars!
$ Rogers: for great seats at the ballgame, (Thanks, Eve), for those who worked to form the new club in North Greenbush, and for the website winning first place!
$ Dale: for 4 courses to take at HVCC, for surviving another accident but totaling car #3, and for Key Club adding 4 new divisions in the district—15,000 kids!
$ Fred: I remember in 1949 when HVCC was HVTI on 7th Ave in the shirt factory! My son went there and continued on at RPI, saving me a good $20,000!
$ Peg: for a relaxing and safe 3 weeks in steamy VA & NC. Temps were between 95 & 105 the whole time--very happy for AC! Visited grandkids & friends, driving about 3000 miles. Best gas price was $2.45 in VA and highest was $3.15 in NC!
$ Bob Pasquarelli: for being called “Mr.”!
$ Jeremy: Hopefully the new Java Beanery will open in 2 weeks on the SE corner in WSL!
$ George: for the great work of SL Kiwanis, and my 26 years association with HVCC!
$ Pres Bob: I went to HVCC too, and now I teach there as an adjunct!
DOOR PRIZE, provided by George, was won by George, who gave it to Phil!
50/50 for $22 was won by Booker!
MEGA 50/50 foiled us again, despite the efforts of Jim Rogers to find the King of Clubs. He managed to pick the Queen of Diamonds from the remaining 43 cards, so the $120.50 will keep growing!
