ü     Eve; Steak & Lobster Roast this year at Camp Rotary, Fri., Sept. 5th.

ü     Convention Reports:

Those In attendance from club: Dave Booker, Jerry T., KVP, Bob L, Jim R, Joe B,

Gov. Elect. Dave: Elected as Gov. Elect. by one vote; newly acquired banner to be displayed by home club; looking forward to the new adventure; very grateful for the excellent attendance shown by club (“I know it was because the convention was at Turning Stone but let me think it was due to me!”)

Lt. Gov. Elec. Jim Rogers: Turning Stone Convention good experience; all club members should attend; always learning something new about Kiwanis; attended forums on Sat. for membership growth, Governor’s project; impressive dinner for installation of new officer’s.

Pres. Elect Jerry: Commented that he has lost his virginity (convention that is); visited many hospitality rooms; found them all very spirited;  Cindy kept Jerry in line; observed a lot of support for Dave; one amendment was passed; only thing changed in the bylaws dealt with the District Committee Chairs; next year the district convention will be held at the Crown Plaza in Albany

Pres. Joe: Good food; good site selection; made seconding speech for Dave

Program: APCSD ongoing upgrades (construction and budget) presented by Mike Ouimet, assistant superintendent & John Isaacs, project engineer.

       John Isaacs reviewed the current upgrades to the buildings:

§         Averill Park H.S. Addition – New automotive vocational area 4000sq ft. of new space with a three lift bay; renovated bathrooms; new 85 space parking area with a new entry door

§         Algonquian Middle School.: asbestos abatement for floors; bathroom remolding; roofing work also with asbestos abatement; locker room. update for summer of 2009;  new lighting for kitchen & storage areas

§         West Sand Lake Elementary School.: flooring replacement for 21 classrooms.; new ventilation system for cafeteria ; card access system to be installed; new lighting; new peripheral fencing

§         Poestenkill Elementary School: same flooring replacement as WSL Elementary; vestibule improvement; new gym doors and a card access system to be installed;

§         Miller Hill Elementary: new stairs; water filtration system and card access system to be installed;

§         George Washington Elementary: new roof for the gym; roof snow stoppers; new flooring; boiler replacement and new air handling equip.

         Kiwanis certificate of appreciation presented by Ken James to John with the thanks of the club for the presentation.

         Mike Ouimet: passed out budget sheets; a look at several years of budgets; how it will guide us in future years; he then discussed the “tax cap” that is currently being discussed in the State Assembly; it really is a tax levy cap; if implemented it will allow school districts to increase their levy by 4%;

        Arguments against cap: districts would not be able to set their own budgets (a cap would restrict the levy); loss of control.

        District does not have slush fund; they do have a (reserve) fund balance allowed to be no greater than 4% of the budget; fund balance could be used to maintain quality of education and give relief for tax payers; they are trying to keep taxes as low as possible.

         A Kiwanis certificate of appreciation was presented to Mike by Ken James

 Happy Dollars:

$       Eve: happy for our incoming officers- Gov. Elect. Dave, Lt. Gov. Elect. Jim, Pres. Elect. Jerry.

$       Jim R.: $10 worth of happiness for the 10 representatives from our club

$       Jerry T.: happy for the state of affairs (Kiwanis) re: Dave Booker and Jim Rogers.

$       Bridgett Ball: $10 worth of happiness for Averill Park Education Foundation; another $10 because she was asked to be team captain for Breast Cancer Prevention: “Making strides against breast cancer.” Bridgett wanted to remind women to get their mammograms and asked that husbands remind their wives to get one.

$       Dave B.: happy for great club support from our club (“It is always there in every way!”), from the Van Rensselaer Division (every delegate slot was filled – only Division to do so!). And for the great convention.

$       Gary M.: happy to be able to correct some misinformation: it was reported that he has had three ex-wives; the truth is that he only had two (but he is working on #3); he was also happy because he still has some tequila left because tequila makes them want to take their clothes off (What ever that is supposed to mean?)

Drawings:

Door Prize provided by President Joe (a gift card at the Java Beanery) went to Bruce Perry;

50/50 worth $15 was won by Gary

The Progressive 50/50 now worth $31 was not won by Bob Pasquarelli – he could not find the King of Clubs from among the 50 remaining cards.

Next week’s program will be provided by Angelo Patti (subject and speaker yet unknown) and the Greeter/Invocator will be Bob Loveridge.

The next week (August 25) there will be no meeting rather we will gather at the “Joe” for our annual Valley Cat’s Outing!

The first meeting of next month will be held on Monday, September 8 (the first Monday is Labor Day and there will be no meeting!) and Joe Cub will present a program on the PR Committee and its responsibilities.  Armand Mills will be the Greeter/Invocator.

Thought for the week: If at first you don't succeed, try something harder - anonymous
