SPECIAL ADDRESS![]() |
by Mitch Levinn, Hoag’s Corners Ambulance Chief. The ambulance company is entirely voluntary and makes no charge to the patient for services. It has an EMT accompanying all calls, and 3 volunteers are scheduled on duty at all times nights and weekends. Hoag’s Corners was one of the first ambulance companies in the county, and the first to include the EMT training. In the early days a hearse served as the ambulance, which was efficient but perhaps disconcerting to the patient. In recognition of the ambulance squad’s 60th birthday this year they are planning a community CPR training day using the American Heart Association’s “Heart Saver” course, which trains the layman as a first responder. They hope to train 60 people on a date sometime in November at a cost of $50 each, and they are looking for funding from SLK as well as other sources.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
ü Sec’y Dave: Dues are overdue. Pay up!
ü Eve: We can’t have the president’s recognition day (steak & lobster) at Tsatsawassa Lake this year, so she’s looking for suggestions. Ideas so far include Camp Rotary, West Stephentown Fish & Game (Rod & Gun?) Club, or Crystal Cove, which charges $42-$45 pp but does all the work. So kwitcherbellyakin about cost when we do it.
ü Joe Cub: Sunday’s concert was rainy but the Reverberators were very good, maybe good enough for SummerFest. Next Sunday is Cavanaugh and Kavanaugh, 6 PM Butler Park.
ü District proposals to be voted on by our delegates:
Limit District committee chairs to prevent undue influence
Allow Lt. Gov. Designate to be Delegate-at-Large
Permit someone not an Immediate Past President to be Lt. Gov. Elect or Lt. Gov. with 2/3 majority vote of the
District Board on a case by case basis.
ü Eve: Botsy’s not feeling well and should know we miss him.
BIRTHDAYS: Pat Lane (who has reached the age where one gets that nice Medicaid card) and Mikki McSherry. Mikki wasn’t there so we sang to Pat alone.

ANNIVERSARIES: Chris & Robin Blais, Joe & Carol Cybulski, Joe & Patricia Grillo, Jeff & Sharon Lawrence, Armand & Ellen Mills, Bruce & Sally Perry, Bob & Deborah Reiter, Kevin & Phyllis Sarsfield, Ray & Dexie Turner, and Miller & Stephanie Young. We sang off key but sincerely.
We enjoyed Eve’s wonderful chocolate cake, but had to auction off one dinner as we were under quota. Doug Baldrey paid full price for the dinner including cake.
PROGRAM:
Membership & Education Committee Chair Bob Pasquarelli talked eloquently about
the duties of his committee. First is membership
growth; we have
gained 12 new members this year. Second and just as important is
membership retention; only 3 of those new members are here tonight. Sponsors
of new members should mentor them and if they’re not participating find out
why. The third function of the committee is to maintain the viability
of the club by making sure projects are consistent with the goals of the club
as seen by its members, and that they meet the needs of the community. Just
writing checks does not hold the interest of the club; we need important
projects members can enjoy and be proud of. One way to do that is through a
membership survey, which Bob prepared and distributed for completion by the
members present. Members not present will have the
opportunity to access the
survey on line so that they may participate as well (Click
here for a printable copy to fill out). Part of the
responsibility of the membership is to see that we have good officers. Bob
discussed at length the ways that our officers grow as individuals as a result
of their position. The president doesn’t do all the work; he/she oversees
committee chairs and other officers to make sure they are able to get their
jobs done. Other officers past and present, as well as the general
membership, can be relied upon to provide support. Barb then pointed out that
in addition to all those things, the job of president is fun. Right now we
have a crisis in that we have not president elect, and Dave B will need
replacement as secretary for the next two years as he takes on the
responsibilities of governor elect and governor. Gary Meislin has agreed to
run for vice president if we have a president elect candidate, and Peg Weiss
has agreed to take the position of secretary for one year if someone else will
take on the Sandpiper. Anyone willing to serve is urgently requested
to contact Barb, Bob, Joe Behson or Jerry. The fourth responsibility
of the committee is education of the membership in order to keep our club a
great one instead of just a good one.
SIGN-UP SHEETS: Help is needed unloading the food bank truck at Doors of Hope this Friday (8/8) at 9 AM. Ray Turner and Ken James are signed up, but we need one more. If you can help please show up.
Tuesday 8/19 Dave Booker and Bob Pasquarelli could use one more person as well, same time same place.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
$ Eve: Back Porch Fest Saturday was great! Happy Gary showed up to offer help because he thought Eve was working alone per last week’s Sandpiper.
$ Barb: Great music of many styles at Back Porch Fest last Saturday at Butler Park. Nice job by our young friend Max Hass who organized the event. Too bad about the weather: two thunderstorms! Many thanks to Eve, Ray Turner, Jerry Tysiak and Skip Patton for working in the food trailer; and to Chet for transporting it to and from and for stocking and cleaning it. What a shame there were NO Kiwanians in the audience!
$ Chris: for 27 years of hell. (Robin, his words not mine! -Ed.)
$ Nancy W. Davis: Someday she’ll tell us what the “W” stands for. Historical Society hasn’t been reimbursed their $30 booth fee at SummerFest.
$ Joe Cub: Thanks for singing for Carol and me for 34 years of marriage, (?) of them happy. (Carol, see note for Robin above. –Ed.)
$ Booker: 1. Glad campaign is winding down and 2. Van Rensselaer Division was awarded Best Division Web Site in NY District and there was a 2nd place a tie for the Best Club Web Site between SLK, East Meadow and Patchogue.
$ Bob Reiter: for 35 years happily married.
$ Gary: Glad he didn’t have to stick around after all Saturday. Eve concurred, as it would have meant seeing him 3 days in a row which was a bit much. Gary said he has 3 ex-wives who feel the same way.
$ Pat Lane is happy because her son-in-law is home from the hospital. He will still need to be in a hospital bed for a year, but kind neighbors near Camp Rotary cut wood for the family all weekend, showing the kind of people we have in our community.
$ KVP: 1. Bob Pasquarelli always does a good job. 2. Eve’s cake was wonderful (Eve pointed out it was KVP’s recipe, so he’d better like it). 3. Nice to see Doug Baldrey.
$ Gary (again) was also happy that the reason he was unable to raise son Kevin on the phone was that he was in Israel, one of the many locations he’s sent to on a regular basis by the military, and he was safe.
$ Jim Rogers is happy that we will have good representation at District Convention at Turning Stone.
DOOR PRIZE, a nicely wrapped bottle brought by Bob was won by PD Jerry Tysiak.
50/50 of $21 went to John Brownrigg
MEGA 50/50 of $22 will grow, as Bob Reiter could only come up with Q♦.
President Designate Jerry closed the meeting remarking it was nice to see Doug Baldrey again. Next week’s program will be a surprise said Jerry, and greeter/invocator will be Joe Distell. Board meeting to follow this meeting.
Secretary Dave confirmed a quorum with Directors Blais, Wagner, Ward, Rogers and Brownrigg; Treasurer Pasquarelli; and Secretary Booker present. PD Tysiak presided in Pres. Joe Behson’s absence.
MINUTES of last regular board meeting and a special board meeting 7/14 were approved.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Bob reported we are in good shape. SummerFest profit so far is $7670, with pledges still coming in. Total expected to be around $9,000. Last year was $12,000. Double fireworks as well as more bands for the 4 days increased cost. Blais moved to accept, Ward seconded, report was accepted for filing.
