PROGRAM

Kevin Sarsfield introduced Chris Raffo, Troop Leader of Girl Scout Troop 181, who explained their new project, restoration of an old candy shop on Taborton Road in Sand Lake.

The four girls are using this project to earn their Gold Award, the relatively new highest honor in Girl Scouting—comparable to the Eagle Award in Boy Scouting.  The girls drove around town taking photos of various historical sites, and studied backgrounds of each.  They chose the little house at the lower end of Taborton Road, and obtained the enthusiastic permission of the property owner, Joan Bishop.  She bought the house she lives in about 15 years ago, and the little rundown building came with it!  It apparently has been used for storage, and has had no maintenance.  Alyson has been doing the historical research with help from the NY State Museum.  It was built by John T. Cotton, a cabinetmaker, and was originally an ice cream parlor and candy shop.  Slides were shown depicting the deterioration of floor, walls, and foundation.  They have had help from volunteers, and the foundation has been jacked up, layers of flooring removed, and walls stripped.  Alyx has been publicizing the project, hoping for support from the community.  They have applied to DOT and the State Ed Dept, hoping eventually to get a NYS Historical Site Marker.  Each of the four has responsibility for a specific area:  advertising, finances, history, and volunteer recruitment.  Appropriately enough, they are selling old-fashioned style candy as a fundraiser.

Barbara Fioravanti presented four Certificates of Appreciation, noting that it was great to see high school age Girl Scouts still active in projects!

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Eve:  Grandson Drew’s broken foot is healing nicely, and he’s hoping to get back to running soon.  Last week’s picnic was great; all the willing helpers made it easier for me.  Thanks!

$       Chris:  My seriously ill friend Russ did pass away, but we thank all friends for their support.  I was able to attend and enjoy the Buddy Guy guitar concert last week.

$       Kevin:  Thanks to the Girl Scouts for tonight’s program.  Please come back with COOKIES!

$       Barb:  Enjoyed a great night at the Crooked Lake House Blues Fest last Saturday!

$       Jim Rogers:  Took my 2 grandsons fishing and they caught 35 fish, 1 large enough to keep!  Also, enjoyed a trip to Chesterwood, (near Norman Rockwell Museum), home of Daniel Chester French who sculpted the statue of Lincoln for the Memorial!

$       KVP:  3 weeks ago my grandson got his license, then got a car, then wrecked the car!  He now has another car, and I am holding onto the keys!  We enjoyed the trip to San Antonio.  The convention was dull, but the River Walk and the Alamo were great!  But the best part was going to Santa Fe, NM for a visit with both daughters and granddaughter!

$       Jim Colabelli, aka Grandpa Jim:  About 8 months ago I showed you this ultrasound that proved my daughter & son-in-law were up to something……..and on Sat July 20 we were blessed with this beautiful Emma Rose!  Doesn’t she look like me?

$       Brownrigg:  The article about our parade was great!  There’s just one big difference between Kiwanis and the Girl Scouts…….THEY have great adult leadership!

$       Pasquarelli:  Ken was right, the convention was dull.  But besides the River Walk and the Alamo, we also enjoyed the Texas Rangers Museum.  I walked so much I wore out a pair of shoes, and lost 10 lbs!  We had a great visit with our son in Houston, too.

$       Dick Johnsen:  Glad to return after serving at a church I’d served 25 years ago.  I’m ready to start working on Kiwanis projects again!

$       Gary:  Don’t pick on me, I’m sensitive!  And I AM smiling!  2 weeks ago my stove went kaput, so I bought a new one, but I still can’t cook!  I can’t figure out what that opening in the front is for.  It’s to put your head in!  NO, it’s electric!

$       Pres Bob:  You two who went to the Alamo……what color was Davy Crockett’s vest?  Believe it or not, it was pink and blue!  He was a real hero!

DOOR PRIZE, provided by Kevin Sarsfield, was won by Kevin, who gave it to Chris Raffo!

50/50 for $18 was won by Barb Fioravanti!

MEGA 50/50 tonight was worth $75.50 didn’t even cooperate with KVP!  He could only find the 4 of Diamonds from the remaining 47 cards.
