ANNOUNCEMENTS
|
Lt Gov Chet introduced Herr Van Der Klerk and his unfortunate story. Johan, who has close family ties to Rotary Intl, was camping at Niagara Falls, and was robbed of all his belongings, including his passport! With the little money he still had he was able to make his way to Schenectady, where family friends reside, only to learn that they were on vacation in Germany! He got in touch with the Albany Chamber of Commerce. Unable to reach anyone in Rotary, they placed a call to his parents. While he was talking to his father, the Chamber's Director was able to hear Johan's mother (a Kiwanian) shout out in the background "Try Kiwanis!" She remembered speaking to Chet a week before, and that he is a Kiwanian and contacted him. Our magnanimous Lt Gov took the 24 year old in, gave him a place to stay, a bed to sleep in and two showers (the first 45 minutes long while Meg laundered the clothing). Because it was Monday Chet brought Johan to our meeting for dinner. When the club learned of his tale, without hesitation we provided him with sufficient funds to reach his embassy in Washington. There he will be aided by his ambassador with a new passport and arrangements so he can go home! We wish you well, Johan, and a safe trip! |
