PRESIDENT Joseph M. Behson presiding
GREETINGS & INVOCATION by Eve Ward
GUESTS: Of Dave Booker, Megan Sanzo, on her 3rd visit before becoming a member
Of Armand Mills, his wife Ellen
WELCOME BACK: Our esteemed secretary, David Booker, from the International Convention in Orlando, Florida! And also to Mikki McSherry, from successful ear surgery!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø Community Services (Mikki): Thanks to those who worked the Food Trailer at the Library on Sat: Chet (stocked & transported the trailer!), Jim Colabelli, Eve Ward, Peg Weiss, Ron Wagner, & Joe Behson. DOORS OF HOPE food truck will arrive on WED JULY 2 this week due to the holiday, and time has also changed. Come around 1:00 pm: Pat Lane, Mikki, and KVP. Next week, Tues July 15th will be back to normal—9 am.
Ø Lt Gov designate Jim Rogers will conclude his introductory visits at Troy tomorrow morning with the breakfast meeting at 7 am on the Sage campus.
Ø
Booker gave a brief report on the convention, deferring to Bill
Whipple who hasn’t returned yet. Representatives
of 1844 clubs (out of 8000) attended, with 3691 delegates (out of 260,000
members). The 2015 goal of one million members will include the whole Kiwanis
family of Builders Clubs, Key Clubs, Circle K, Aktion Clubs, & Golden Clubs.
Terms of officers may now be two years rather than just one. The theme was
changed from Celebrate Diversity to Celebrate Inclusiveness
because it was felt that it was a more positive attitude.
Ø DUES ARE DUE TOMORROW – JULY 1st! Only half our members have paid so far, making half our membership in arrears!
Ø John Brownrigg displayed 2 XXL regular Kiwanis shirts which are available, but there were no takers! We need to order more, in smaller sizes, for all our new members.
Ø Eve circulated a signup sheet for our Summerfest R&R picnic on July 14th. It will again be a pot luck, (please indicate what you might bring), with cold cuts and beverages provided. The Banjo Band, however, is unavailable this year. Bring chairs.
Ø KVP: Dave’s campaign fund donations are slow in coming. Tonight is the last night for voluntary contributions. {That sounds ominous!} We’re only halfway there. Please do what you can. Having a District Governor from our club is a distinct honor!
Ø Booker: Two more Division Councils to attend as candidate for Governor-Elect. The South Western Division in Olean is too far for a day trip, so I plan to make it an overnighter. But the July 17th meeting in Ronkonkoma (Long Island) could be doable.
Ø Bob Loveridge: Please turn in your (preferably) sold or unsold 50/50 raffle tickets and the money. They will be sold during Summerfest. Need volunteer sellers. Drawing Sat night.
PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD to
John Brownrigg for 15 years! Congratulations!

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER

Education and Membership Chair Bob Pasquarelli introduced Megan Sanzo to the Club, and informed her that she was joining an organization of 300,000 members in 100 countries, but, of course, Sand Lake is the best! Sponsor David Booker pinned on her membership pin, and Bob presented her with her membership packet, including a new “virgin” doo-hickey, bearing the words “Making a Difference” She was also given her certificate of membership, no longer suitable for framing…….because it was already framed! Megan told us she lives in Rensselaer, served as Key Club Lt Gov while in high school, and is now attending Cazenovia College as a psychology major. As Key Club LTG she visited all the clubs in the division, and “I chose you” to join! Welcome, Megan!
PROGRAM
President-Elect (or is it Designate?) and Summerfest Chair Jerry Tysiak
announced that there were just 65 hours to go until Summerfest 2008. Sponsor
money is coming in slowly. The rides have arrived in town and are being set
up. The town has spread new topsoil in the low places, but unfortunately all
the rain we’ve had have made it quite muddy, so it is now covered with pea
gravel to give us better footing in the Food Tent. Helpers
and
trucks are to meet at 9 AM at the park to transport needed equipment. Bob
Loveridge announced that his work crew will be available from 9 AM on Thurs,
no work Fri (holiday), will be back Sat AM, and again on Monday morning. The
craft vendor sites need to be marked. He has parking permits for the bus
garage area. The vendor drop-off area (for unloading) is in front of the
pavilion, then vehicles must be moved. The names and times will be on their
permits. 3 Circle K students have promised to help, as has Troop 526 BSA.
Jerry has phoned SLKs who do not attend meetings. Shifts need to be filled!
Logistics: Jim Rogers has been promised 6 radios from Wells; Behson and Loveridge will be responsible for them. The Porta Johns and dumpster will arrive Wed. The ambulance is to be parked between the pavilion and the flagpole.
PR: Joe Cub has sent releases to radio stations, TV stations, newspapers. Full page ad appeared in the Advertiser Friday.
Shirts: Armand is hopeful that the rest of the shirts will be done tomorrow, and tent banners Wed. Red security shirts and SLK worker shirts will be given out tonight.
Parade:
John Brownrigg sent out 46 letters of invitation and received 4 acceptances to
participate. However, past experience has shown that most “just show up”!
Formation will take place at Sand Lake
School, leave at 10 AM, travel 1.6 miles to the park by 11 AM. He is hoping
for traffic controls at the major intersections of Eastern Union Tpke & Rt 43,
and at the triangle in Averill Park, plus complete closure of Gettle Rd prior
to fireworks display Fri and Sat nights. There will be 5 Grand Marshalls
representing community service personnel: John Vooris from WSL Fire Co, Paul
Glasser from AP/SL Fire Co, Kelly Mohan from SL Ambulance, Susan Zimmerman
from the Girl Scouts, and April Pendergast from APHS Key Club.
Food Tent: (Bob Pasquarelli) This is the Club’s maximum commitment, and much more help is needed! Food prep starts 5 PM Thurs at the park. Bring back those Kiwanis aprons and use them. Also needed are outdoor extension cords and coolers, with names on them please! Stars and stripes scarves will be available to wear. Fri & Sat between 5-9 PM, CRITICAL!
Crafters, Vendors, Community Groups: Jim Colabelli and Jim Rogers to mark sites.
Music: Barb has arranged for Youth Bands on Thurs, and others Fri. Sat is Mikki’s Variety Show plus the band “Aged In The Hills”.
Fireworks are all set to go Fri & Sat nights.
Tennis starts at 9 AM Fri. Joe Behson has his personnel assigned. Softball: Teams being formed. Road Race starts at 8 AM Fri. Skip has 15 signed up, but walkups will be accepted. Wristbands for rides will be sold for $10 and will be honored from noon til 5 PM on Thurs. Jerry thanked everyone for all their help. We hope for a great Summerfest, for good weather, and lots of fun! An enthusiastic round of applause was given to Jerry for all his work!
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Woodie: I had my 75th birthday on Father’s Day, and last week Marion and I celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary!
$ Eve: Averill Park High School graduation Sat went very smoothly, and my grandson Drew received Advanced Regents Honors!
$ Jim Rogers: Ken James turned 80 today, and he’s having dinner downstairs!
$ Gary: My birthday was on Father’s Day, too, and my 3 kids called me! And that was fine! I got a haircut, from that secret place. If my haircut is good, I keep it a secret, but if it’s a bad one, I tell everyone where I got it!
$ Barb: My daughter Wendy is back after spending a month studying art in Florence, Italy!
$ Dick Johnsen: Thanks for the use of the tent at my house for the Albany Senior Orchestra (led by Joe Trupia) picnic. Jim Colabelli was a great help. Is the Chairman of Summerfest getting gray? He still has lots of spirit!
$ Pat Lane: For the first time, all 11 of my grandkids are together at my house!
$ Armand: Boston may not be in first place now, but they’re still way ahead of the Yankees!
$ Peg: I had the privilege of attending the lovely celebration of Joe and Audrey Trupia’s 50th wedding anniversary last Saturday. And to the 6 gallant gentlemen—all Kiwanians—who danced with me to a very special song—Thanks, guys, you made my day!
$ Joe Behson: For Megan’s membership, the beginning of the 2nd half of the year!
DOOR PRIZE, a $10 gift certificate from the Java Beanery, was won by Jo Moccia!
50/50 for $28.50 was won by Bob Pasquarelli!
MEGA 50/50 continues to confound us! Even one of our newer members, Ray Turner, couldn’t find that King of Clubs out of the 8 cards left! He drew the 8 of Diamonds, so the $733.10 grows!
