ANNOUNCEMENTS

·         Kiwanis International catalog passed around for any potential orders.  Return to Sec Dave.

·         Booker:  Thanks to those who helped with the Food Trailer at the Cancer Relay:  Ron Wagner, Peg, Eve, Bob Loveridge & Joanne Beach, Bob Pasquarelli, and Barb Fioravanti, who worked all night with Dave.  Chris Blais stayed with the Key Clubs, and the head count was the same Sat AM as it was Fri PM!  Chet slept in AC comfort in his camper until the dumpster pickup woke him up (ohhh, poor Chet)!  Alison came to deliver ONE espresso, and it wasn’t even to anyone working in the trailer!  Bob P was pleased that more than $75,000 was raised, with the Food Trailer contributing $1000.  The luminaries were more numerous than ever, and were a moving reminder of how many people/families are affected by cancer.

·         Eve:  SummerFest Recovery Picnic will be Mon July 31st at Butler Park, once again with the Banjo Band as entertainment.  There will be NO meeting Mon July 24th following SF!

·         Eve also announced that our ValleyCats outing would be Wed July 26th when they play Jamestown.  There will be Polish food available to buy, and the tickets are $8.

·         Chris Blais:  Key Club Divisional will be July 12th at Butler Park for cleanup duty.

·         Barb distributed posters for the Talent Show and requested they be posted around town.

·         Bob Loveridge:  SummerFest Sponsor assignment sheets have been given out, and he stressed the need to sign up sponsors ASAP—we need the money!  Also, his dad Ray, who is now 80, has received the OK from the Town to refurbish the fitness trail.  Girl Scouts and the AP Runners will also help with this project.

·         Jim Rogers presented a check to Bob Loveridge for $1000 from painter Ken Nolan for SummerFest, and another check to Jerry Tysiak for $500 from Jim & Joanne Rogers for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Unit!  Thanks so much, Jim!

·         Pres Alison read thank you letters from Joe Bruno for the use of our tent at his family picnic (read “fundraiser”), from Past Key Club Lt Gov Elizabeth Counterman for all our support of her projects and trips to convention, and from her twin sister Abigail Counterman for the Kiwanis Award she received for graduation.

PROGRAM

          Frank Breselor introduced Bob and Renee Phaneuf, who are the owners of the newly refurbished “Island Bob’s General Store”, (formerly known as the Variety Store in the center of Averill Park).  Bob has found his American Dream in this new business venture.  He first fell in love with the architecture of this old building, and set about to restore it to its former beauty as accurately as possible.  He then opened the General Store 4 months and 19 days ago, and is still adding new features such as Mexican night, Asian night, the Canoe Counter, the unique “palm trees”, and the latest, a catering service.  He has many antiques on display, as well as the groceries and deli delights for sale, to eat in or take out.  Bob noted that his was just one of the several small businesses that have recently opened in town:  Slow Jed’s Mud House, Uncle Marty’s, The Towne Tavern, a real estate office in the former Fratello’s Pizza…all small ventures as opposed to the more common “Big Boxes” like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or chain restaurants.  He feels that they are more compatible with the newly adopted Town Master Plan, and the concept of our village or hamlet set-up.  We could still use sidewalks to make the town more pedestrian-friendly, places to park and lights.  We should encourage these small businesses so that more money stays here.  Bob and Renee live on an island in the Third Burden Lake, and he related some adventures of getting home from the mainland, especially in the winter!

Kevin Sarsfield thanked Bob for a provocative talk, noting that most business owners in this town do choose to join Kiwanis, and presented him with our Certificate of Appreciation.

HAPPY DOLLARS

$        Tysiak:  Much thanks to the Rogers for their generous gift to the KPTU!  Last week’s tour of the unit was heartwarming, with several SLKs participating.

$        Kevin Sarsfield:  Celebrating 20 years living in this community.  All my kids were educated in Averill Park schools, went on to college, and after all that money spent on colleges, my son has joined the circus!  Actually he has a job, not performing, with Cirque du Soleil!

$        Mikki McSherry:  $6 for the pleasure of working at Camp Rotary, in the food trailer, and the tour of the Children’s Hospital!

$        Chris Blais, for the emergency delivery of an espresso at the Relay for Life!  We had 28 kids there, 18 from Averill Park, and didn’t lose any of them overnight!

$        Peg, for a wonderful trip to North Carolina to see my 3rd grandson graduate from high school.  I caught “Hurricanes Fever” watching all the hockey games!  I’m hoping that tonight’s final will see the Stanley Cup find a home in Raleigh!  {It did—they won it!!}

$        Clayton:  Had a great trip to Alaska visiting my son and his family who are stationed there.

$        Jim Rogers:  Spent a week at Hammondsport trout fishing with my brother & his wife.  Glad I hired Ken Nolan to paint; he gave us $1000, and is considering joining the club!  Also, the woodpeckers are busy working on Botsy’s barbershop {at minimum wage, says Botsy!}

$        Barb:  Echoing Chris’ gratitude for the Key Clubs who stayed all night at the Relay.

$        Dick Johnsen:  Coming out of retirement to preach in Schenectady at one of my former churches, starting July 1st.

$        Kathy:  Darrick graduated from Princeton with honor, and he was the speaker at the baccalaureate service in Princeton Chapel!

$        Pablo:  Bryce, he’s the man!  I’m adding a Vegas Circle to the front of the JavaNet Beanery!  {This must be an “inside joke”, because most of us were at a total loss to understand it!}[to the editor – “What happens in (Las) Vegas stays in (Las) Vegas” from a current ad campaign for Las Vegas]

$        Bryce:  Out of more than 900 Key Bank branches in the US, our WSL branch was rated #3!

$        Kelly:  Had an awesome time at Camp Rotary—Botsy was my boss, and told me everything to do!  Also, my stepdaughter graduated from high school, and I was honored to be asked to give the speech at the baccalaureate service!

$        Bob Pasquarelli:  Enjoyed my time in the south.  Visited my son who has moved to Houston.  Mission work was in Abbeville, LA which was completely flooded by Katrina.  Out of 500 families who lived there, only 100 families have returned.  Farmlands are salted and useless for planting, so livelihoods have been lost.  We rewired the church and parish hall that had to be completely rebuilt.  It’s Cajun country with proud and unique people!

$        Chet:  Joe came in second in his last race!  His friend Tyler had a bad accident but is okay.

$        Gary:  When the trauma unit opened, I met 2 doctors from Arizona who know my cousin who is Professor of Emergency Trauma Medicine at the University of Arizona.  So glad ONE Meislin did well!  On an UNhappy note, “SHE’s” back—but she’s leaving Friday!!  That’s happy, but even 1100 miles isn’t far enough!

$        Pres Alison:  Only 4 days of school left!!!

DOOR PRIZE—an IOU from Frank Breselor—was won by Bob Pasquarelli!

50/50 for $25 tonight was won by Bill Whipple!

MEGA 50/50 worth $471.50 this week just keeps us in suspense.  Chris Blais could only find the 2 of Hearts in the 23 remaining cards!  WHO will find the King of Clubs, and collect the big bucks?
