PROGRAM

Joe Grillo introduced his co-worker Tina Palmero from the NYS Public Service Commission Division of Electricity and Environment.  With the aid of slides, Tina presented an overview of what New York State is doing to lessen the use of fossil fuels in favor of clean energy sources.  Renewable energy comes from wind, sun, water, and biological by-products.  The aim is to replace fossil fuel emissions, advance new technologies, benefit local economies, and stabilize price fluctuations.  The state agencies are using energy from these sources in increasing amounts, and providing tax benefits for others who do so.  Illustrations showed some of these locations.  The largest Hydro Power Plants are in the Niagara and St Lawrence Rivers, but smaller ones are nearby on the Mohawk River at the Cohoes Falls in Crescent and Vischers Ferry.  Solar Energy is being used on the Northway for road signs, on agency building rooftops, schools such as East Greenbush and Voorheeseville, at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, and at private residences.  It is expensive to install, but provides increasing amounts of power needs.  There are many state subsidies and incentives to encourage its use.  Overseeing projects is NYSERDA (Energy Research & Development).  {Interesting update:  Assemblyman Paul Tonka has just been named new NYSERDA

Director}.  Biomass incinerators which burn wood chips and byproducts of the paper industry are located in Lewis and Franklin Counties, and can be co-fired with coal to reduce sulphur emissions.

Biogas (manure digesters) are more efficient on a large scale by commercial generators rather than by individual farmers, but one actually using this method is the Harrington Farm in Brunswick.

Wind power has shown enormous growth and is more competitive.  The best resources are moun-

tainous areas (windier) such as Maple Ridge, the largest in NYS, in Lewis County on the Tug Hill Plateau.  It covers over 12,000 acres, and this method cohabits well with existing farmland, preserving our agricultural economy.  Peg Weiss presented Tina with our Certificate of Appreciation for a fascinating and timely look at how NYS is attempting to solve a big problem!

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Barb:  Today we just finished installing solar energy panels on our roof, and for a short time I actually DID see my meter go backwards!

$       Mikki:  So glad to be a part of this group.  Thanks, especially to 6 SLKs, for all the support during my mother’s illness.

$       Skip:  For NY State’s efforts with alternative energy; glad to be a part of it!

$       Jim Rogers:  We celebrated our youngest grandson’s 5th birthday!

$       Gary:  Finally heard from my 3rd kid, for either my birthday or Father’s Day.  Almost disinherited him, or maybe I did!  Ain’t no water dripping on my head—inside—got a new roof!  And the squirrels who never paid rent have been evicted by panels of sheet metal!!

$       KVP:  Thanks to Joe Behson who couldn’t use the 2 tickets to the Hoosick Falls chicken barbecue.  We did, and it was good!

$       Joe Grillo:  For Tina’s presentation, and for my granddaughter’s graduation, from Pre-K!

$       Pres Bob:  For a great visit last week with my dad Ray at my brother’s in Charleston, SC!

$       Jerry:  Clayton and I DID resolve the $150 discrepancy!  All’s well!!

DOOR PRIZE, provided by Joe Grillo, was won by Eve!  And it was not bay rum!

50/50 for $21 was won by Booker!

MEGA 50/50 has just started to grow again to $22, but Jim Colabelli couldn’t do better than the 7 of Clubs from the almost new deck of 51 cards!
