LEGION OF HONOR AWARD was presented to Doug Baldrey for 35 years!

PRESENTATION:

John Brownrigg gave a brief history of SLK’s gifts to sick or injured children transported by ambulance.  The first teddy bears, wearing vests and hats with a Kiwanis patch, were created by Lila Jean James.  The latest “critters” were donated by Kohl’s, via Rhonda Stevens, with Kiwanis patches sewed on each animal by women from the GOOFS.  Bags of 25 “Kiwanis Kritters” were presented to each of the 4 ambulance services, as the representative of each gave a brief account of their own organizations.  They all agreed that the use of stuffed toys helps calm hurting kids, enabling the medics to treat them more easily.  John thanked everyone connected with this project, which shows how cooperation among many groups can benefit the children of our community.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Jerry Tysiak introduced Rick Sturm and Rob Saba, who thanked SL Kiwanis and the other clubs who have pledged thousands of dollars to the creation of the KPTU at Albany.  Only $13,000 remains to be raised, and it is hoped that Kiwanis will renew its beneficial support of this worthy cause.  The PICU and NICU (Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units) serve children from infancy to 18 years, and are the only facility of its kind between New York City and Canada.  Tours are available and are encouraged.  Rick coordinates the Kiwanis efforts of the 3 local divisions, Capital, Mohawk, and Van Rensselaer.  In order to recognize the outstanding efforts of individual Kiwanians, a special award was created, the KIWANIS PEDIATRIC FELLOW AWARD.  Tonight this award was presented to two outstanding SL Kiwanians, Chris Blais and Barbara Fioravanti!  Chris was SLK’s 6th, and Barbara will be the 7th, (she was not present this evening), joining Dale Hall, Chet Melius, Jerry Tysiak, Kevin Smith, and Ken James, in this prestigious group.  A standing ovation was accorded to all these hard working Kiwanians!

Sarah Tripp presented Rick and Rob each with our Certificate of Appreciation!
