INDUCTION OF THREE NEW MEMBERS
Pres
Joe, Sec Dave, and Eve Ward presented Jo Moccia, Nancy Davis, and Pat Lane
for membership into SLK. They are joining an international organization
of 8000 clubs in 96 countries, all pledged to help children throughout the
world, with a membership goal of one million members by 2015. Each woman
received her packet of information, including the (in?) famous DOO-HICKEY!
Jo urged each of us to VOTE at the high school tomorrow. If you want
to know which way to vote, see me later! Pat, who plans to retire soon
from Wal-Mart, is looking to help the community. Nancy is grateful to Kiwanis
for keeping me off the streets on Monday nights!

FRIE
NDS
OF KIWANIS PRESENTATION
Pres Joe presented Scott Rockwell, as the representative from Ackner Fuels/MainCare Energy, with a membership plaque and a Summerfest shirt (2007, but soon to be updated), thanking him and the entire company for their sponsorship of our largest project. Scott in turn presented SLK with a check for $500 for this year’s event!
PROGRAM

Pres Joe
introduced Program Chair Bill Whipple, who received the traditional
“SLK welcome clap.” Bill commented on his “rousing welcome”, and
introduced his two guests. Diane Reed has been the program director of
CoNSERNS-U and REACH of Catholic Charities of Rensselaer County for two
years. Prior to that
,
she was a school social worker in the Arbor Hill section of Albany. CoNSERNS-U,
(an acronym for Community Network of Schodack, East Greenbush, Rensselaer,
Nassau, and Sand Lake), is now headquartered in the City of Rensselaer,
(may be reached at 463-8571), after many years of working from Albany, and
serves all economically challenged neighbors regardless of race, color, creed,
sex, national origin, age, disease, disability, or lifestyle. Some of their
services provide case management and referrals, furniture, children’s
clothing, (especially important is the back to school clothing and school
supplies), holiday and emergency assistance, coats for kids, and food
pantries. REACH, (another acronym for Rural Ecumenical Action Community
Helping) is a collaborative effort of the area churches serving the
communities of Sand Lake and surrounding areas. They were asked by SLAAC (Sand
Lake A
ssociation
of Area Churches) to help the working poor in our towns. Michele
(Mickey) Kayser is the outreach worker who works 21 hours weekdays from
the Church of the Covenant in Averill Park, with a caseload of 18 families.
Appointments can be made by phoning 423-5903. They serve 900 children in
Rensselaer County, working with Doors of Hope, and giving referrals for
parenting classes. Mickey commented that there is a stigma attached to
“taking charity” even though it’s really needed. She is also an advocate for
National Grid to help keep power from being turned off. Funding is difficult
for case management, and donations are always welcome, as are volunteer
workers. Ken James thanked both Diane and Mickey for their good work,
and presented them with our Certificate of Appreciation for coming
tonight.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Eve, for the wonderful performance last night by the Sand Lake Chorale in their spring concert with SLK members Jim Colabelli, Peg Weiss, and Jeremy Vosburgh, -- whose solo was great!
$ Joe Cub, for Diane and Mickey and their wonderful work, and also for the trip to DC with my Dad, to see the World War II Memorial!
$ Jim Rogers, for our 12 new members so far this year, thanks to Pres Joe’s emphasis! Also for Scott Rockwell accepting Ackner’s membership in Friends of Kiwanis!
$ John Brownrigg, for headlines about the Red Sox: “Bronx Bashing,” and “Red Sox & Mets both beat Yankees.” Also for Joe & his “harem,” and for Eve & her Kiwanis women!
$ Bob Carpenter, for the Yankees who are just slow starters, and “here’s $25 that says the Yankees WILL beat Boston this year!” Any takers?
$ Chris Blais, for the Sox on top! If they keep winning, I’ll be broke by the end of the season!
$ Gary, for MAJOR Kevin Meislin, who’s home for 2 weeks, and is a major pain in the ***! He’s cleaned out half the house, and I have no idea where it all went!
$ Skip Patton, for the thrill of walking into Fenway Park this weekend and seeing that “World Champions” flag hanging there! There will be space for another one this year!
$ KC DPLG Megan, for the humor in this club! And for making the Dean’s List!!
$ Nancy, for remembering the W on my membership certificate! What’s it for? Wild, wise, wonderful, you name it! Also, for Jim and Peg in the Sand Lake Chorale!
$ Booker, for the Red Sox, naturally!!!
$ Jo: SLK will be 60 years old in 2009, women have been members only 21 years, and you make a big deal of them meeting once!
$ Bill Whipple, for tonight’s program, and for the 3 newest members (all women)!
DOOR PRIZE, provided by Bill, was won by Mickey Kayser!
50/50 for $23 was won by Megan Sanzo!
MEGA 50/50: John Brownrigg’s ticket was pulled; yet despite asking Jo to choose his card, he was doomed to fail! She picked the 6 of Diamonds from the 13 remaining cards, so the $606.60 will grow again next week!
