PRESENTATION

Jerry Tysiak called Chris Blais to the front to give him SLK’s Token of Appreciation for the inspirational sacrifice of his 28-year-old beard that he had promised to lose if the APHS Key Club was able to raise $5000 in a few short months for the Alzheimer’s Foundation.  This public sacrifice, which was dramatically performed by Master Barber Botsy on the stage of the high school auditorium, followed a slide show of the unique fundraising projects this energetic group of Key Clubbers undertook, culminating in a spaghetti dinner underwritten by Pablo Martinez and the Java Net Beanery.  They even charged admission to SEE the Great Shave!  A huge check for the amazing amount of $5908.61 was presented to a representative of The Alzheimer’s Foundation, and many local politicians praised the Key Clubbers’ efforts!  The gift box contained ingredients for a Beard Startup Kit:  superglue, some of the shorn beard hair, and even the two “worms” that Botsy “found” when he began the shearing!  Chris thanked everyone for their support of the kids, and for the Starter Kit.  The new beard began growing Friday night!  He claimed that his wife Robin, (who had NEVER seen his whole face), found “sleeping with a strange man” to be quite exciting!

ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS FOR 2006-2007

Pres Alison announced the slate of officers selected by the Nominating Committee, and after hearing no other nominations from the floor, directed Secretary Dave to cast one ballot for each.

PRESIDENT Robert R Loveridge, PRESIDENT-ELECT Joseph M Behson, VICE PRESIDENT Gerald Tysiak, and TREASURER Robert S Pasquarelli have been duly elected for the next year.

DIRECTORS Bryce Cutler, Sarah Parslow, and James Rogers were elected for a three-year term.

Installation of these new officers and directors will take place in October 2006.

President-Designate Loveridge and the new Board selected David Booker as SECRETARY.

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER PABLO MARTINEZ

Membership & Education Chair Bob Pasquarelli addressed Pablo telling him that he has joined an international organization of 300,000 members in over 100 countries, all dedicated to community service, especially benefiting children.  The Sand Lake Kiwanis Club is over 50 years old, and is without a doubt the best club in the Capital District!  Bob presented Pablo with the official Kiwanis booklet containing more than a “pair of finalia” of pertinent poop, including the famous Doo Hickey that he is to prominently display in the Beanery, after which his sponsor, Chris “Baby Face” Blais pinned him.  Pablo expressed his pleasure in becoming a member of SLK, and invited everyone to patronize his Java Net Beanery in the 43 Mall, where he can be found 7 days a week, (except not on Monday nights now!)  He was glad everyone liked his spaghetti sauce; it’s his grandmother’s secret family recipe known only to him!

HAPPY DOLLARS

$        Jim Rogers, $5, mother-in-law died of Alzheimer’s last year, appreciation for the efforts of Chris, the Key Club, and even Botsy, gave each an 8x10 photo of the shearing!

$        Bob L gave a dollar for every vote for him for president--$1 total!  (By the Secretary!)

$        Dale Hall, thanks for the get well cards, and noted that NY District Kiwanis has put The Alzheimer’s Foundation back on the official list of charities.

$        Chris Blais, for Pablo, a wonderful friend; for SLK, great role models for the kids; and for Botsy’s very steady hands!

$        Barb, for Botsy, Chris, and the AP Key Club, for a very well done program!

$        Jim Colabelli, for Jeremy Vosburgh, a prospective member, and for missing Chet’s long-winded story last week!

$        Booker, for surviving the Literacy Run!  I was a traffic monitor at Congress & 2nd St in Troy, and was supposed to stop cars to let runners go by—they don’t cooperate!  Don’t really want that job next year!

$        Pablo:  Glad to get a night off from the Beanery!  And also for Chris, a great friend, always!

DOOR PRIZE, provided by Pres Alison, was won by Bob Pasquarelli!

50/50 for $28 was won by Fred Wurtemberger, who was happy for it and gave a Happy Dollar!

MEGA 50/50 worth $398 tonight stumped the best efforts of Joe Behson who, despite the dramatic “drum roll” by the Head Table, could only pick the 8 of Hearts from the 27 remaining cards!

SPECIAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

This special board meeting was called in order to give a timely response to a request from Michelle Barratto and the committee working on a fundraiser for Averill Park teacher John Svatek who was severely injured in a skiing accident, resulting in paraplegia.  This group plans to have a benefit concert on Friday, August 25th in the APHS auditorium, and is requesting financial support for the $2000 cost of the band they want.  After much discussion concerning the high cost of importing this particular band from Long Island, and the limited number of patrons the auditorium can hold, it was decided that SLK would prefer to give money directly to the family rather than pay for a band which may or may not raise the expected amount.  $500 was approved to be given to the Svatek family, and a letter of explanation would be sent to Michelle.
