PROGRAM

Kelly Stone introduced tonight’s speaker, Trooper Mike Anson of the NY State Police, who is the School Resource Officer for the Averill Park District (and also for the Brittonkill District). Mike has served 20 years with the State Police, the last 3 in his present position, the creation of which followed the tragic shootings at Columbine HS in CO. His primary aim is the safety of all school students, and he conducts drills to practice lockdowns and evacuations. He reviews the tapes of all surveillance cameras, and is always alert for drug recognition behavior. 10% of American high school students presently abuse drugs. He handles parental custody problems, stalking, assaults, thefts, vandalism, weapons in school, and often uses dogs in searches of school property, including lockers. Communication is most important, and he tries to promote an atmosphere in which students will feel free to tell him of suspicious or troublesome behavior. He has set up a “bully box”, where anonymous tips can be placed for him to check out. He encourages parents to call him with their concerns. Staff have been asked to put such calls right through to his extension. Dick Johnsen presented Mike with our Certificate of Appreciation for a most reassuring presentation.
