PROGRAM
John Brownrigg introduced our four
guests from the Averill Park School District: Dr Jo Moccia, Superintendent of
Schools;
Sharon
Lawrence, Assistant Superintendent; Michael Ouimet, Business Manager; and
Regina Cristo, Vice President of the Board of Education. Dr Moccia presented
a video, “Averill Park: Our Small Town”, produced by Jim Powers, APHS
Class of 2006, who was “Mr. Averill Park” for that year. The video showed the
rural nature of our school district of 140 square miles, which serves 3500
students in 7 schools, using 73 buses traveling more than 1 million miles each
year. 100% of the Class of 2007 qualified for graduation, with 83% of them
continuing their educations at various colleges. AP has full day
Kindergarten, and 1/3 of those students enter first grade as readers.
Attendance in the district is
excellent, nearly at the top for Rensselaer County schools. The proposed
budget is $53,560,835, and increase of $2,173,735, or 4.23%, resulting in a
2.96% tax-levy increase. It includes an additional teaching position, a
multi-
Year technology replacement plan,
health-safety-risk management services from BOCES, new coaching positions, and
continuation of the new theater curriculum. Cost avoidance includes a 10%
increase in employee health insurance premiums, with medical co-pay increased
to $25, re-designing the Special Ed program, an in-house Vocational Ed
program, and energy savings of over $1 million. The school district is the
largest employer in the community,
which
lacks a commercial tax base. Increases include BOCES costs, salary increases,
tuition for students who elect to attend the new Tech Valley HS, fuel, and
communications. Cost per pupil in AP is $16.84, less than many area
schools. Printed literature pertaining to the budget was distributed, and
questions were taken. Use of natural gas vs. fuel oil has been considered.
WSL School uses natural gas; not feasible for others. Languages are needed in
lower grades, but teachers are not available. Some proficient high school
students tutor after school. Education is available for board members—6 hours
are mandatory. 3 issues are to be determined by this year’s vote: the
$53+million budget, purchase of 9 buses for $602,000, and one board seat.
Voting will be on Tues May 20 from 7AM-9PM, APHS Aux Gym.
Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Jo, Sharon, Mike and Regina by Jim Rogers.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Peg, for a delightful week long river cruise through Holland and Belgium, visiting various cities along the Rhine such as Amsterdam, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Brussels and Bruges, the highlight being the acres of tulip fields and the spectacular Keukenhof Gardens, a riot of bright colors and wonderful aromas!
$ Deacon Bob, for the cards and support at the time of my Dad’s passing.
$ Fred, for successful cataract surgery!
$ Jim R: Attended the Flyers/Rats hockey game, longest in AHL history! There were 5 OT periods, resulting in a Rats loss by 1 goal, but saw 98 saves by Mike Leighton!
$ Armand, for Boston being in first place. Also, I’m glad to see where my taxes are going!
$ Chris: Will Yankee fans ever have anything to celebrate?
$ Booker: Happily my session with food poisoning has ended!
$ Pres Joe, for my guest Debra Roy on her 3rd visit, and for our partnership with SLCA!
DOOR PRIZE, an IOU from Bruce Perry, was won by Jim Colabelli!
50/50 for $27 was won by John Brownrigg!
MEGA 50/50 defeated even Booker, who was SO close – he picked the QUEEN of Clubs, not the King, from the remaining 16 cards, so the $555.10 will continue to grow!
