PROGRAM
PLG Chet Melius
introduced Julia Kelly and Cheryl Glanton, who were representing the
Elementary School Playground Improvement Project at Miller Hill and Sand Lake
Schools. With the assistance of slides, they described the need. There are
507 children enrolled in both schools, who share the use of a playground with
old, unsafe, and inadequate equipment. There are only 4 usable swings; unsafe
equipment has been removed at the direction of the insurance company. Not
only do the school kids use the playground, but also the after school program,
the Sand Lake Town summer camp, and other community groups. All kids need
safe, handicap accessible, and age & development appropriate equipment. The
improvement project is estimated to cost about $50,000, and there is no
provision for this in the district’s budget. Not only are donations being
solicited from many sources, including Kiwanis, but volunteer labor is also
needed for installation. They have raised nearly half the amount from PTA,
fundraisers, local businesses, and students themselves have a Kids Can
CHANGE the Playground drive, collecting change. There are donor
categories, and plaques thanking them will be displayed. SLK is being asked
for $3000 and a table at SummerFest.
Bob Pasquarelli thanked Julia and Cheryl, and presented the Certificate of Appreciation.
