PROGRAM

Mikki McSherry introduced Glenn Wallace, Chair of the Mahikan District
(Rensselaer & Columbia Counties & Village of Waterford), Twin Rivers Council
(13 upstate NY counties), Boy Scouts of America. BSA was founded in 1910, and
has spent nearly 100 years helping young people grow into responsible,
well-rounded citizens. More than 100 million Americans have experienced the
traditional, values-based BSA programs. Glenn himself has spent 64 years of
his life, (since his Cub Scout days), involved
in scouting, one of the “4 loves of his life”, along with family, church, and
a local charity. Troop 526, which we
sponsor, has been in existence for 73 years, Cub Pack 526 for 48 years, and
the newest unit, the co-ed Explorer Post, affiliated with the Rensselaer
County
Sheriff’s Department, is now 6 years old! Glenn advises charter organizations
such as SLK to include scouts in appropriate club activities, (such as our
trash pickup days), to help scout leaders, and encourage the troop to
participate in outdoor activities. BSA provides liability insurance for such
activities. Some of the accomplishments of the Mahikan District are producing
an annual report in the form of a colorful brochure, a Camporee at Schodack
Island State Park in summer, and the Klondike Derby in winter at Poestenkill’s
Rotary Reservation, also supported by SLK. A photo collage was displayed
showing scouts of all ages engaged in their favorite activities. Glenn
concluded with a quote from Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, recipient of the Silver
Buffalo, BSA’s highest volunteer award: “Kids are our future—even if the
future isn’t what it used to be.”
Joe Cybulski thanked Glenn with our Certificate of Appreciation, noting that many SLKs were Boy Scouts, but only Jim Rogers had attained the highest rank of Eagle! However, the Club has a mother of two Eagle Scouts (Kathy Evensen) and the grandmother of two Eagle Scouts (Peg Weiss)!
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Barb: A correction from last week—it was Jim Colabelli who won and auctioned off my jelly for the Alzheimer/Shave Fund. To ease his disappointment of losing homemade jam, I have brought him a replacement! {Apologies from the Ed for the error in all that confusion!}
$ Botsy: Celebrated 45 years as a barber on April 1st! {And I don’t think that’s an April Fool}

$ Brownrigg: Since the Key Club is so close to their goal, how about some more contributions to the SHAVE FUND? Kelly collected several, and they’re over the top--$5000 plus!!!!! Don’t forget the big day is Friday, May 5th, 7PM in the high school cafeteria--$2 admission!
