PROGRAM
Woodie Hacker
introduced his friend from Albany High teaching days, Sgt Fred Aliberti, who
is now Chairman of the Board of the Albany Police Dept PAL. Sgt Fred taught
science at AHS and then became interested in law enforcement, joining the
Albany department 20 years ago. He was made sergeant 12 years ago and began
doing PR work for them. He was involved with Boy Scouts, both as a leader and
as a father, so the PAL was a natural step. He is about to retire from the
force, and plans to work at HVCC in Security. Back in the late ‘80s and early
‘90s the
Albany
Police Dept was having a bad time with crime in general and drugs (mostly
crack cocaine) in particular. By the mid ‘90s most of the drug dealers had
been driven underground, and although that’s when the gangs surfaced, crime
went down! It was obvious that kids needed direction.
The Police Athletic League (PAL) began in the 1920s in New York City with boxing clubs for boys. It is a proven program that has spread and now encompasses much more than sports. They run and after school program to help with homework, sponsor a marching band, bowling, chess club, and provide positive role models for both boys and girls, knowing that kids need structure in their lives. Police officers are now in most schools, and help with programs such as Science on Patrol, teaching the art of forensics (CSI influence). They hope to combat drunk driving with simulated DWI crashes and the aftermath of injuries and deaths. PAL mostly in cities, while the State Police work in the more rural areas. The mascot dog, “Sgt McGruff” who “takes a bite out of crime,” is another tool they use. The Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Sgt Fred by Jerry Tysiak, even though Fred admitted to being a member of the ROTARY CLUB!
HAPPY DOLLARS
