Ø       INVITE A COMMUNITY GUEST NIGHT moved to 3rd Monday, April 21st.  This will be our annual installation of officers for both Key Clubs, and parents are welcome.  Remember, if you invite a guest, be sure to notify Dudley by Thurs April 17th for dinner reservations!

Ø       GOV-ELECT CAMPAIGN:  Last Monday, John Glasser (& his white limo!) drove fellow SLKs Candidate Booker, Jim Colabelli, Ken James, Eve Ward, Bob Loveridge, & Peg Weiss, plus Noreen Barrett & Sandy Ryan from NGB to the Ontario Division Council meeting in Liverpool, where Booker was introduced to that division and also to the Young Professionals of Syracuse.  He deftly fielded many questions about Kiwanis policies and procedures.  And we ALL had a great time!  Thanks, John!  The next appearance will be Sat April 19th at Mohawk Division’s Prayer Breakfast at the Stockade Inn in Schenectady at 10 AM, $15.  Future appearances at Division Council Meetings will be Mon May 12 at Long Island South Central, Fri May 16 at Niagara North & South, Tues June 3 at Hudson River West, and Mon June 9 at Finger Lakes.  Consider attending one or more of these to support Dave.

Ø       INTERCLUB:  Hoosick Falls Club now meets nights instead of noon—Falls Diner at 6 PM on 2nd through last Tuesday of each month.  They would like an interclub tomorrow night:  President Joe, Booker, Eve, & Fred agreed to go!

Ø       PUBLICITY:  Joe Cybulski was seen on TV Ch 11 with Benita Zahn, with no Kiwanis pin or logo in evidence.  He paid his fine, and elaborated on Care Giving Month – Health Watch.  In this week’s Advertiser, there was a group photo of those who volunteered to be designated drivers for New Year’s Eve celebrants.  Shown with County Exec Jimino were two SLKs: Booker and an unrecognizable Bob Reiter.  Booker’s Kiwanis jacket was very obvious.

Ø       Pres Joe presented his 2nd Quarterly Award for inviting the most community guests to Botsy, whose guests not only came and observed, but joined the club!  Congratulations!  Is anyone else even close to Botsy’s efforts?  {Brownrigg:  “Eve whacked me!”  What did you say, John?}

Ø       DISTINGUISHED KIWANIS CLUB AWARD:

Lt Gov Gale presented the 2006-2007 pins to Sec Dave and IPP Bob, noting that Sand Lake and Castleton were the only 2 clubs in Van Rensselaer Division to be so honored.  {“Yours is bigger than mine!  How come?”}

PROGRAM

          Bob Loveridge, Young Children Priority #1 Committee Chair, shared the results of his research into the origin and purpose of this Kiwanis International Committee.  There are four divisions of YCP#1:  Maternal & Infant Care, Child Care & Development, Safety & Pediatric Trauma, and Program Education & Support.  Over 7.8 million Kiwanis member hours have been donated to these causes to benefit the lives of children all over the world.  The biggest problem is prematurity—too many babies are born before term.  Over half of the children who are eligible to enter kindergarten are not ready for it.  Early childhood is when kids grow the most, and the first 3 years of a child’s life is the most important.   The brain learns by processing information from all of the five senses, and a nurturing environment is vital to development.  Since 1993 our 3 local divisions, Capital, Mohawk, and Van Rensselaer, have had a partnership commitment with Albany Medical Center’s Pediatric Trauma Unit, and have contributed over $421,000 by such working projects as Bells of Life, Skip-A-Meal, and the Children’s Miracle Network.  The telethon has raised millions of dollars; locally it is held the first Sunday in June, and this year will be at Ch 11, WMHT’s new studios in the Rensselaer Tech Park.  Dale Hall and his Key Club kids are to be commended for their faithful work answering the phones for many years.  Some of us have been on tours of Albany’s Kiwanis PTU, and you are encouraged to go and learn more about this great benefit to our larger community, the only one of its kind between NYC and Montreal.

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Nancy Davis (in absentia):  Thanks for supporting the 2nd book, Sand Lake Revisited.

$       Eve:  The trip to Liverpool was great, and David was terrific in his presentation!

$       Skip Patton:  The Dissipated Eight was wonderful, as usual!

$       Jim Colabelli, for the trip to Liverpool, but I didn’t quite understand Dave’s telling about being under a lady’s sink……..!?  {“Oh, pipe down!”}  {“This is so heart wrenching!”}

$       Pres Joe:  Here’s my usual penny per person in attendance at the D8 concert--$7 for 700 enthusiastic people who just about filled the high school auditorium.  And also for my week and a half in London, visiting Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, and other places!

$       Fred:  I’ve been away—who was under the sink?  I traveled to Florida and Mexico—it was interesting, but I like the northeast much better than the southwest!

$       Chris:  Took the Key Club on tour of the KPTU—they were very impressed!

$       Jerry, for the rest of the club who stayed here with me last week to do the club’s business!

$       Deacon Bob:  As a reward for dog-sitting while we were away, I offered my 11 & 12 year old granddaughters a choice of an I-Pod or a trip to the bookstore, and they both chose the bookstore!  I was please with their choice, but the I-Pod would have been cheaper!

$       Jim Stacy:  My older daughter took all-conference honors in soccer, and my younger daughter is in the top 5 of her class!

$       Jim Rogers, for Bob’s program, the most comprehensive one on YCP#1 I’ve ever heard!

$       Gary:  Years ago, when the PTU was first proposed, 2 MDs from the Univ of Arizona at Tucson came here to speak on its behalf.  One was a friend of my cousin who was a professor at U of Ariz, and who started a helicopter rescue unit there!

$       Past Pres Bob, for my brother Dave, the tree man, who worked so well with the kids at the cemetery cleanup.  He promised to take down one tree, and ended up taking down 3 of them!

$       Bill Whipple:  Thanks to Dave who changed the letters on the sign for me while I was away.  We went to visit our son Scott and his wife in Arizona and had a great time until leaving for home.  The trip was a nightmare of delayed flights, missed connections, missing luggage, the shuttle that never came, and spending a night in the airport!

$       Roberta Breese:  So glad to be here.  Very impressed with your club!

$       Booker, for all those who came to support me at Liverpool!

DOOR PRIZES were provided by Ray & Bob Loveridge, & Mikki.  The IOU from Ray for Nancy Davis was given to Gary to deliver.  The other two were won by Jerry Tysiak and Dave Booker!

50/50 for $25 was won by Joe Cub!

MEGA 50/50, now up to $514.60, defied Peg’s best efforts, and will continue to grow.  The ED needs a new computer, but unfortunately picked the 9 of Spades from the last 18 cards!
