PROGRAM
Pres Bob
introduced Olga Ashline, Health teacher at APHS, who explained the planned
Garden Project, an ambitious in
dependent Health class for seniors, to be
constructed at APHS. She and the four students illustrated the talk with
slides, showing the gar
dens
at both Goff MS and Sand Creek MS, which serve as models. They plan to
create a greenhouse and raised-bed garden area on the school campus, open year
round to students and the community. The raised-beds will grow
vegetables during the summer, the harvested produce to be used in the school
cafeteria, and will be constructed by the shop and woodworking classes.
The greenhouse will be purchased rather than built, for various reasons.
It will be heated and insulated for winter use, and be large enough to
accommodate entire classes. The gardens will serve as an
educational source for health, nutrition, engineering, math, and Special Ed
classes, and is expected to include working with the community, garden club,
and anyone who likes to garden. Future plans include shrubs and flowers.
Detailed plans have been submitted and approved by the AP Board of Education,
and are awaiting approval by the NY State Ed Dept. The initial cost is
estimated at $15,000, and community sponsors are solicited. SL Kiwanis
has already committed to sponsorship, as are the SL Garden Club, and others.
They are hoping for not only financial help, but also gifts of materials and
labor.
Joe Cybulski thanked the group for their informative talk, and presented them with our Certificate of Appreciation.
