PROGRAM
Angelo Patti
introduced Kevin Walsh and Brian Bell from St Catherine’s Home for Children in
Albany. They gave a slide presentation of the services provided by this very
old institution organized in 1886 when
Albany had many
abandoned and orphaned children due to the Civil War legacy and
industrialization. Nuns from the Daughters of Charity opened an “orphan
asylum” in the Schuyler Mansion to house contagiously ill children. In 1913
the operation was moved to 40 N Main St and worked cooperatively with Brady
Maternity Hospital, where maternal and child health was taught. When Brady
closed in 1966 it became St Catherine’s Infant Home, caring for children of
neglect, drug & alcohol abuse, homelessness, and mental illness. In 1971 the
name was changed to Center for Children, gradually shifting operation from the
Daughters of Charity to laity who are professionals who provide a complete
range of human services designed to offer hope, foster growth, and improve the
lives of children and families. The Residential Program provides treatment
for children aged 5 to 13 who have been removed from their families and
require 24 hour supervised care. The Therapeutic Family Program offers help
in specialized foster care and family based treatment for those with
emotional, behavioral or developmental disabilities. The R&E May School day
treatment program serves an elementary school population of students with
special education and therapeutic needs that cannot
be met in a traditional academic setting. The Marillac is designed especially
for homeless families and provides assistance and advocacy support to
address some of the conflicts and issues that led to their loss of housing.
Community Based Programs work with other agencies and institutions to provide
clinical assessment, parenting skills, counseling, aide services, respite
care, after school care, and supervision of court-ordered parental visitation
of children. St Catherine’s has over 300 professionals at 8 centers in
Albany, serving a 19-county area of northeastern NY, and has a budget of $11
million funded by federal, state & local governments and donations.
Volunteers and foster parents are always welcome!
Chet Melius presented Kevin & Brian with our Certificate of Appreciation.
