PROGRAM

After “underwhelming” applause, the “always smiling” Gary Meislin introduced Nancy W. Davis, current president of the SL Historical Society, who, with the help of the Town Historian Judy Rowe, gave an overview of the history of the organization.  It seems that in 1974, Judy and Jane VanPraag used to get their hair done at the same salon in Nassau, and often talked about the history of our town, and how there should be an organization of those who were interested in preserving it.  Sand Lake Kiwanis gave seed money, and Carl & Marie Beck were among the first members.  Jane was the first president, and other early officers were Judy, Sanford Young, Joan Fuess, and Shirley Rescott.  Dues were $2 per year, and have risen only to $5 now.  Meetings were held in the Town Hall, Church of the Covenant, and anywhere that was available.  The town has many very old taverns, residences, and inns, dating from the 1700s.  Many artifacts, literature, and pictures are on display.   At first the newsletter was hand typed and run off on a mimeograph machine; now computerized issues are mailed to members.  Bob Shuey presented programs on the Civil War, and the fire departments, as did Judy on the old glass factory.  The Charter Celebration was held in October 1975 at Glass Lake Inn.  The trustees used to meet early before the meetings at various private homes, but the favorite spot was Cipperley’s, for Meg’s terrific baking!  The 1880 book, Nathaniel Sylvester’s History of Rensselaer County is the basic reference, with Preserving The Past, Enriching The Future.  There were 35 members the first year, and now there are over 100.  Mary Hilt, reporter for The Record Newspapers, did a survey of the town’s cemeteries, along with Madolyn Carpenter, Town Historian at the time.  In 1976 to celebrate the country’s bicentennial, a quilt, now on display at the Town Hall, was created under the direction of Myra Wehnau and Mrs. Glenn Ferguson.  A plate was also created, which now would cost $35 to make.   The Society presents an annual scholarship to graduating seniors who excel in history.  In 1984 it was given to Tom Lukovitz, now an MD, and in 1987, Susan M. Whipple was the recipient.  A very popular activity in the 1980s was the annual Historical House Tours.  A Teddy Roosevelt portrayal was presented in 1988, and in 2001, SLK presented Mary French with a certificate.  She and Bob Lilly wrote and published a history of Sand Lake, which has been followed with another edition, Sand Lake Revisited.  Artifacts, pictures, and records are always sought, and donations are appreciated.  Meetings are the 2nd Tuesdays with interesting programs, and the next one, on April 8th, will feature Jeff Mann, in armor!  Mikki volunteered to represent SLK at the 2012 Town’s Bicentennial Celebration, now being planned.  Jim Parslow presented the ladies with our Certificate of Appreciation for a most fascinating program.
