PROGRAM
Mikki McSherry
introduced Liz Finn, of the Averill Park Central School District Service
Learning Program. Liz has been associated with SLP for 10 years and is now P
roject
Coordinator. SLP is funded by the federal National Learn and Serve America
Program, via the NYS Education Department to improve learning standards and
character education. Service Learning is a methodology allowing…*students to
learn by participating in service experiences satisfying actual community
needs…*integration of service activities into the academic curriculum…
*reflection time for students to think, talk, and write about service
experiences… *students opportunities to apply newly acquired knowledge and
skills in real life situations. In Averill Park there are 1400 students and
60 teachers in grades K-12 involved in 30 project areas including literacy,
health,
intergenerational, environmental, and global issues. Some of the actual
student projects are reading buddies, mentoring & tutoring, writing their own
books and pen pals. They visit nursing homes and assisted living residences to
play games, do crafts, and explore career possibilities. One student was
heard to remark, “Not all old people are weird!”—a real attitude adjustment!
They work on fitness and nutrition education, gardening (school gardens are
growing!), and substance abuse education. Recycling, exploration of alternate
fuels, (a “frybid” vehicle that actually runs on vegetable oil!), building a
nature trail, installing Peace Poles at schools (SLK helped with that one),
and learn about human rights involving immigrants and refugees. Many
activities are related to hunger, poverty, and homelessness: food pantry
drives, working at Doors of Hope, supporting the Heifer International Project,
and learning about how the Great Depression affected everyone. They hope to
be able to interview military veterans for oral histories of war experiences.
After answering several questions, and expressing hope for future SLK
cooperation, Liz was presented with our Certificate of Appreciation by Bryce
Cutler. Literature was available for the taking.
