PROGRAM
Clayton introduced Rensselaer County
Executive Kathy Jimino, who gave the club an
update
on what is happening in Rensselaer County and what should be happening in the
near future. The county government is always trying to expand the tax base.
Today 89¢ of each county tax dollar goes to funding the state and federal
mandated programs and it’s only 11¢ that the county can use to maintain the
sheriff’s patrols, the roads of the county and provide for the economic
development of the county.
Much is happening in southern Rensselaer County: GE has a new health care project in conjunction with RPI, a new hotel is in the works in Troy, U Albany’s “east campus” is busy and a company that started there has moved to the old Kmart plaza.
The county is encouraging the towns to update
their mas
ter
plans and would like to develop a unified effort to define where economic
development is desired and encourage business to settle in Rensselaer County.
If the county government is aware of the desires of the towns these plans
could be taken into consideration when there is future development of the
infrastructure by the county.
She noted that although NY has the highest property/local taxes in the nation, Rensselaer County has the lowest cost of general government in the state. There is a very real exodus of the states population to areas of the county with lower costs. With the loss of population there is a corresponding loss of the tax base. The county government is always trying to reduce the cost of government and is making use of volunteers such and Bob Pasquarelli and Dave Booker who assist seniors with HIICAP questions at the senior centers.
Ron Wagner presented Kathy with the club’s thanks and a speaker’s certificate.
