MIDYEAR CONFERENCE REPORT: from several sources!

Those who attended were President Bob Loveridge, President-Elect Joe Behson, Secretary Dave Booker, Jim Rogers, Jim Colabelli, and Jerry Tysiak.

Very well attended.  Desmond a good choice.  Groups looking for other evening restaurants found DeCarlo’s on Wolf Road quite stimulating!  Jean’s Hospitality Room was fun—thanks to those who worked and/or contributed to it.  Jean’s candidacy off to a running start—opponent is another woman from the Finger Lakes Division, so the NY District should have its first woman only election!

SLK came home with several awards:  PR Award Banner Patch, Banner Patch for 2nd place for Club Bulletin{who got first?}, 2nd place in the Public & Business Affairs Award, and last but not the least Distinguished Club Status for 2005-06!

PROGRAM

Bob Reiter introduced his wife Deborah who is a volunteer with Community Hospice.  She has been with them for 3 years, after having volunteered for years in several other organizations.  Hospices from 7 counties support the African AIDS Partnership Program with staff exchanges.  Deb went with 4 nurses and another volunteer to Durban, a city on the Indian Ocean, after a long tedious trip with multiple flight changes.  There are 40 hospices now in Africa, and the American dollar goes very far toward buying necessities.  She worked with many elderly people, and helped them make “Memory Boxes”—collections of family mementos to assist the young children in the family to remember the old folks after they die, and give them a sense of belonging.  Her primary role was to observe, and return to witness and educate here in the US.  AIDS is the most prevalent disease, but they are also afflicted with diseases that are curable here, such as cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, etc.  Their luggage was filled with gifts of clothing, towels, toys, food, & medications, and they were not hassled by customs.  After they arrived, they were told that the greatest needs were masks and rubber gloves!  Cultural differences were great:  women carry the greatest loads—wood, water, gardening, and childcare, while men worked in mines and repaired houses.  Deb said she did not feel unsafe being a white woman in black communities, but the Americans did always travel in groups, and were careful not to take unnecessary chances.  The needs are GREAT, and contributions are always welcome to African Partnership Program of The Community Hospice.  Pablo Martinez thanked Deb for her informative talk, and Presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation for her program.

The NY District EVERYDAY HERO AWARD, first one from the SL Kiwanis Club, was presented to Deborah Reiter for her selfless work on behalf of poor Africans.  President Bob gave the Certificate, and Bob Reiter pinned on the Medal.  The Club responded with a standing ovation.

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Ken James:  Visited Peter Sentz who said to say HI to SLK.  Also for a close call backing out of Peter’s driveway.  Just missed hitting a 10 year old on a 4 wheeler!

$       Chris Blais:  Had a wonderful dinner at Pablo’s last Friday.  Also grateful for Botsy giving up his time to make a house call to cut my dad’s hair.  Thanks!

$       Jim Rogers:  River Rats are doing better.  After 19 losses to Hershey, they finally beat them on their turf!  Also for Deb Reiter earning the Award!

$       Joe Cub:  $5, not to Kiwanis, but to Deb for Community Hospice!

$       Pablo:  Sold 7 cases of our coffee at Millers!  Great Fri night dinner—especially when Chet thought his new truck had been demolished!  Great party Sat night at the Desmond!

$       Jean:  $5 for the support by SLK for my campaign, for my niece’s very first Kiwanis meeting, and for Karen’s first “other Kiwanis Club” meeting!

$       Bill Whipple:  “Careful, Bill, Betty Jean is sitting back there!”  First, a dollar from Nancy Davis for a good “Gladiolus King” meeting a few weeks ago.  Then, a great week’s trip to Phoenix, AZ to visit son & daughter-in-law, where temps were 50-78 degrees.  Went to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion NP in Utah, Valley of Fire SP in Nevada, and drove across Hoover Dam.  In the 1600-mile drive we never saw Wylie Coyote, but on the way to Tombstone, AZ, a Beep-Beep Road Runner crossed in front of our vehicle!
