PROGRAM
Pres Bob introduced
Skip Patton who illustrated with slides an experience he had last fall, akin
to “The 3 Stooges Go Sailing.” The fact that all three SLKs survived to
return was a testament to the benevolence of a divine providence, since an
uncounted succession of errors, both of commission and of omission, were
committed! On a blessedly sunny day with calm seas, the weekend after Labor
Day, Skip and Bruce Perry put their trust in the captain, and set sail with
Frank Breselor on his 30’ sailboat from Mystic, Conn., bound for Block
Island. Navigation skills began with a road map to show where Block Island
was, so the captain could figure out (on the nautical charts) where he was!
(The blind leading the blind?) Or maybe they were counting on help from the
glorious Michelangelo’s DAVID—minus his Scottish kilt! It was doubtful
that a course was ever plotted, since great faith was placed in following
“that sailboat out there that probably knows where he’s going!” Maybe to
Bermuda? Apparently the mysterious GPS wasn’t much help—it was loosely taped
to a metal mast! The radio didn’t work, either! But the Hardy Boys got the
sails up, the boat heeled, and they skimmed the waves to Block Island harbor,
trailing their dinghy behind them. They found a mooring am
ong the many boats, and climbed into the dinghy to head for
shore and dinner. Next day they hired a taxi and toured the island,
finally deciding to head back to the boat—but which one was
it? They all looked so much alike! And the dinghy motor was balking—are we
out of gas? No, it apparently was a corroded wire! Preventive maintenance, anyone? Got that fixed, eventually
found the right boat, and headed out of the harbor, after narrowly missing the
incoming ferry, and getting tossed about by the multiple wakes of all those
larger boats. Confidence returned with the help of a bottle of Jameson’s, and
seeing another sailboat ahead who SURELY knew where HE was going, headed for
homeport. When hunger struck, galley slave Bruce went below and was able to
find a bag of carrots—sustenance for the body! (Jameson’s took care of the
spirit, or was that SPIRITS!) After reaching homeport, gear was loaded into
the dinghy, and they headed for shore, only the dinghy motor finally did quit,
and now the wind was blowing them back out to sea. But again providence
intervened, their shouts were heard by a passing boat, and they were happily
but ignominiously towed to land! All three intrepid sailors have their own
fond memories of their weekend at sea, but if you hear of a charter service
called Breselor’s Stooges, better look elsewhere!
