PROGRAM
Woodie
Hacker introduced Kathy and Ken Buckley of Melrose, founders of Military Mom
In Action. The Buckley’s’ two older sons entered military service just one
month before Sept 11th, and Kathy started sending CARE packages to
them when they were deployed to Iraq. Learning that many soldiers received
little or nothing from home, she expanded her mailing list, and the rest, as
they say, is history! Military Mom In Action was born, and has grown rapidly
to over 1250 boxes per month! They pack snack boxes, cookies, candy,
toiletry, clothing, and also toys, school supplies, and stuffed animals for
the Iraqi kids. Since all packages to the military must bear an individual
name and address, most packages are distributed by chaplains and commanding
officers. Kathy read several very poignant thank you e-mails she has
received, showing how grateful the soldiers are. Ken
related some incidents where gifts to children, sometimes one crayon each to
make them go farther, have created a bond between the kids and the soldiers.
He told of one incident where a convoy moving through a village was halted by
a little girl, clutching her American stuffed animal, who sat down in the
middle of the road in front of the lead Humvee. Through an interpreter, they
learned that she had seen an IED bomb placed further along by insurgents, and
she did not want her new friends to get killed! Obviously, donations are
welcome. So far the Buckleys, (Ken is now unemployed), have spent over
$105,000 on postage alone! MMIA is a 501c-3 charity, so your help is tax
deductible. Complete contact information: PO Box 153, Melrose, NY 12121,

John Brownrigg issued our invitation to the Buckleys to participate in our
Summerfest parade, and to have a booth at the Park for the weekend. He also
promised some of our Kritters to be sent. Jerry Tysiak presented our
Certificate of Appreciation to Kathy and Ken for a most moving program, and
urged everyone to support their efforts.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Skip Patton, for just being here! Last Mon night I had a sudden frightening life-threatening throat infection that closed off my windpipe, and put me in St Mary’s ICU for 2 days! After many tubes in many places, plus massive doses of antibiotics, I obviously survived, and am very thankful for the great care I received.
$ John Brownrigg: Took a trip to Cooperstown, and saw Yankee hats on Roger Clemens’ statue. Wonder for how long?
$ Barb Fioravanti: In Florida last week for a Lakeathon—a gathering of owners of Lake Amphibian aircraft—and had a wonderful time!
$ Chet Melius: Joe passed his road test, and has a limited license! He no longer races go-karts, but has now graduated to sling shots, which are 9½ ft long modified stock cars. Also for the Buckleys, and the great job they are doing! And please patronize Valente’s Pub—all my kids now work there!
$ Bob Loveridge: I had to go on a Caribbean cruise last week so could not attend the meeting! Also, I really noticed how much more buff Skip was!
$ Jim Colabelli, for the great program—donated some $ to the cause. Showed a picture of his granddaughter happily playing with the donated Kritters from last week!
$ Woodie Hacker: The oldest Club member can still come up with a terrific program!
DOOR PRIZE, forgotten by Woodie, so it is an IOU to Skip Patton!
50/50 for $25 was won by Fred Wurtemberger, and donated to the Military Mom In Action!
MEGA 50/50 tempted Fred again, but the $411.60 will grow another week, because he could only come up with the 7 of Hearts from the 24 remaining cards!
NEXT WEEK PROGRAM: Scott Paul, with a mystery program!
FEB 25 GREETER/INVOCATOR/CERTIFICATE: Eve volunteered to replace Pablo - but Botsy said he could do it better!
MAR 3 PROGRAM: Social Chair Eve Ward
