PRESENTATION

Two young ladies from our local Girl Scout troop requested Kiwanis help and support for their Silver Award project, the restoration and cleanup of the Holcomb Cemetery, a private burial ground that now has become Town property.  It is located at the intersection of Holcomb/North Nassau Road and First Dyke/Methodist Farm Roads.  All graves are from the early 1800s, and many were participants in the Revolutionary War.  A prepared poster of pictures showed how it is overgrown with weeds, and many of the tombstones have fallen over and/or been broken.  The girls are hoping for Kiwanis and Key Club help along with the use of tools and trucks.  Assistance was promised for the workdays to be held around April or May, and follow-up was referred to the Sponsored Youth Committee.

PROGRAM

Community Services Chair Mikki McSherry has been attending PTA meetings in order to become closer to the community children’s activities, and invited representatives to tell of their individual school’s projects.  Mikki herself told of WEST SAND LAKE Elementary’s fundraiser, a Brooks BBQ takeout this Wed Feb 6th from 4 – 7 PM.  Chicken or ribs or complete dinners may be pre-ordered by calling Gail Padalino @ 674-0047 or Connie Kane @ 712-5130, and range in price from $6.50 to $9.50, depending upon what you order.  Kelly Stone represented the HIGH SCHOOL, which sponsors a counseling center and provides computers, works with athletes, and gives scholar-ships.  She urged people to attend the Board of Education meetings on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays.

Cindy Keeler from ALGONQUIN MS said they need people to chaperone the youth dances, and to sell tickets during the days Wed, Thurs, & Fri from 10:30 – 12:30.  They also have a 4-week after school enrichment program needing volunteers to share talents with the kids.  Dawn Beverwyck from MILLER HILL/SAND LAKE (all one school, 2 buildings) said they have an enrichment program also, but not until the spring.  The athletic program lasts 2 weeks, but there are groups in art, languages, science, banking, and the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program.  They need help with their Holiday Store and the Spring Carnival.  Sally McKenna from POESTENKILL told of their Harvest Festival in October and hoped we would again provide our Food Trailer so they would be spared providing food for participants.  They have an enrichment program from 3 – 5 PM and they would love to have more use of their nature trail area behind the school.  She invited us to tell of our travel experiences (with pictures), and become readers to the kids.  They also sponsor a large group of after school day care kids.  Barb Fioravanti presented each speaker with her own Certificate of Appreciation, and expressed our intentions to help out where we could.

EDUC & MEMB (Pasquarelli):  1 new member inducted, 3 prospectives

INTERCLUB (Wurtemberger):  2 out, to Albany Charter Night and Division Council

PROGRAMS (Tripp, in absentia):  Sarah e-mailed everyone, stressing them to note when they have a program assignment, and to take the responsibility for it.  Notify Sarah and/or Booker as soon as you have a speaker or program set up.  If you cannot fulfill your assigned date, YOU must find a replacement, and notify Sarah and/or Booker of the change!

SPON YOUTH (Barb):  Attended both school’s Key Club meetings, plus Divisionals

WAYS & MEANS (Tysiak):  Summerfest Committee has met and plans are underway for a 2-night extravaganza with fireworks and band each night (Fri 7/4 & Sat 7/5).  Much advertising must be done to publicize this change, so people will stay in town rather than go to Albany on the Fourth.  Next committee meeting will be Mon Feb 18th.
