Ø MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE to meet with Lori Leckonby immediately following meeting.
Ø CONDOLENCE card circulated for the Pasquarellis on the death of Joan’s uncle in NH.
Ø John Brownrigg reported that our Kiwanis Kritters (stuffed animals) are now stored at Trupia’s. The GOOFS at COC will sew on Kiwanis logo patches, and the Kritters will be given to rural ambulance companies for any children who need ambulance assistance. John needs contact information for each ambulance group!
Ø Botsy has 10 cartons of peanuts for sale @ $10 each—first come basis! Don’t wait!
Ø INTERCLUBS (Fred): Completed last week—Albany Club’s Charter II Celebration, Booker, Loveridge, McSherry, & Wurtemberger. Last call for DIVISION COUNCIL 6 PM Wed Jan 23rd at Moscatiello’s for $27—Behson, Booker, Hall, Pasquarelli, Rogers, & Weiss.
Ø Lt Gov Gale thanked SLK for the invitation to come to our Invite a Community Guest Night. She noted the value of interclubs was to meet more Kiwanians, and to learn of new projects, -- and she liked this one that tells the Kiwanis story to the public. LG Gale reminded all of the Mid-Winter Conference to be held at the Hudson River Resort Feb 22-24, and had the registration forms with her, along with forms for Distinguished Kiwanis Clubs.
Ø A PLAQUE OF APPRECIATION was presented to Pres Joe by Cheryl Glantan on behalf of the Miller Hill/Sand Lake Elementary School PTO for our support for the newly built playground. The kids love it, and Kiwanians can play on it any time the kids are not there! The PTO is collecting General Mills cereals Education box tops and Campbell’s Soup labels.
PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD to Gary Meislin for 29 years—and
he was smiling!
LEGION OF HONOR certificate and pin was presented to Joe Distell for 35 years of continuous membership! Congratulations, Joe—come more often—we miss you!

FRIENDS OF KIWANIS
Pres Joe Behson and Imm Past Pres Bob Loveridge presented a plaque proclaiming the West Sand Lake Hannaford Supermarket (fmly Millers) as a valued friend and supporter of the Sand Lake Kiwanis Club to Tony Bottillo and A.J. Kean, managers, for their continued support of Kiwanis projects in the community. It is hoped that this plaque will be prominently displayed in the store. Both men were also given special tee shirts (they don’t have to wear them in the store)! Pres Joe also noted that this was Tony’s second visit—he only needs one more to become a member!
PROGRAM
Bob Carpenter introduced
Robert Pasinella, Jr., Director of Economic Development & Planning, and the
Industrial Development Agency of Rensselaer County, whose job it is to create
an economic climate which will further the growth of both small and large
businesses. Following the establishment of a development zone, with the
support of Sen. Joe Bruno, over $2 ½ billion has been brought into the county,
making Rensselaer County #1 north of NY City. An Industrial Development
Agency was created to give benefits for manufacturing jobs, such as tax-exempt
bonds, PILOT (Payment In Lieu Of Taxes), and sales tax relief. The goal is
f
or these companies to create new jobs and invest money in the communities.
The IDA monitors their progress to see they keep their promises, or there will
be “clawbacks”. One of the biggest projects is the $135 million GE Global
Research, which located on RPI property in the Technology Park. The Agency
works closely with RPI, HVCC, and Sage to attract the high tech
opportunities. New York State created the Empire Zone, which helps inner
cities rehab and improve. Kevin Smith commented that without this Empire Zone
assistance, he would not have been able to open his Schaghticoke store. Some
of the retail site studies have been at the Wal-Mart Center in East Greenbush,
the Rts 4 & 43 site, and Temple Lane site, also in East Greenbush. Barb
Fioravanti presented the need for a county supported public airport for use by
corporate aircraft to get closer to their businesses.
Skip Patton presented Bob with our Certificate of Appreciation for an enlightening program.
