ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø Long time SLK member Bill Freeman passed away last week after a long illness. Services will be Wed Jan 10 at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave, Albany at 1 PM. Members shared memories of Bill: he declined club presidency as soon as he learned of his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease; always referred to Diane as “my first wife”; looked like Sherlock Holmes with his cap, pipe, and slow, deliberate ways; was always interested in education; taught us the traditions of Hanukkah and the dreidels; referred to his WWII experiences as his “misspent youth”. We will miss you, Bill, as we already have.
Ø Rensselaer County Legislature will posthumously recognize the contributions to community of another beloved SLK, Phil Pierce, tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9 at 5:30 PM.
Ø House Chair Dudley Dorr was presented with banner patches for SLK participation in Skip-A-Meal, gift to the Intl Foundation, and work on the Governor’s Project.
Ø Mikki McSherry requested the return of “Favorite Kiwanis Memories” for use in her March program.
Ø Pres Bob read a very poignant thank you letter from one of the families who received our food box and toy bag.
Ø NY District Governor’s Official Visit will be Saturday, January 27.
Ø Community Service Co-chair Kathy Evensen requested help unloading food at Doors of Hope this Friday, January 12 (Colabelli, Whipple, Noland) and Tuesday January 23.
PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARDS to Gary Meislin for 27 years and to Mikki McSherry for her FIRST year! Congratulations to both!

JANUARY BIRTHDAYS: Pablo Martinez, Bob Loveridge, Dudley Dorr, Skip Patton and Jim Colabelli. All were present and all were serenaded. Eve’s chocolate cake was fantastic!

JANUARY ANNIVERSARY: Joe and Meg Distell.
COMMITTEE REPORT: Community Services Co-chair John Brownrigg gave a comprehensive report on the activities of his committee for the preceding year. At Christmas time, 60 families with 122 kids received 2.5 tons of food plus toys, and 45 units of blood was collected, using 259 hours of SLK work. The top 10 projects for the year were Adopt-A-Highway, Christmas Food Boxes, Key Club Interaction, Kiwanis Reader Board Signs, Toys For Tots, Food Trailer Soccer Program, Camp Rotary Night, Cub and Boy Scout Sponsorship, Veterans Memorial Support, and Doors of Hope Food Program. Our Care Toys received overwhelming support. The proposed Winter Carnival needs more discussion. Suggestions for new projects were Child Car Safety Seat Program with Sheriff’s Department, Bike Rodeo run by Key Club, Pig Roast, and Membership Drive.
PROGRAM: In Joe Trupia’s absence, Dave Booker noted that the Senior Services Committee had conducted a Blood Analysis Clinic, served a Luncheon for the seniors, held a Holiday Party for the Brookside Seniors, distributed food boxes at Brookside, and assisted with educational seminars to help seniors understand the Medicare Part D drug program.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Chris Blais, for the moving experience of delivering food and toys with Kelly.
$ Jim Rogers, for surviving his accident in front of Villa Valente, saved by seat belt & airbag.
Also for becoming an officer in the genealogy organization of Mayflower Descendants.
$ Brownrigg, for such a good food drive, and for the experience of delivering food boxes with Colabelli! Tears vs notes!
$ Colabelli, for going out with John! “I love ‘em and leave ‘em!” The map we had was no good, but GPS saved the day. We lost Bill Whipple somewhere! Thanks for my birthday greetings, AND, my daughter & son-in-law are expecting our first grandchild!!
$ Whipple: Now you know why I go out alone!! And, our granddaughter’s picture was in the Record’s feature article about 12th Night.
$ Pablo, for Chris’ help with the dances. Went to breakfast with Ken Noland, and then he helped me paint. “I love him, but in a manly sort of way.”
$ Joe Behson: Daughter-in-law finished her Broadway run in “The Grinch” which was a sellout. On to bigger and better shows!
$ Joe Cub: I’m the happiest football fan because Dallas lost and the Eagles won!
$ Peg, for a great holiday visit in North Carolina with family. Granddaughter gave me her ticket to the Carolina Hurricanes hockey game, and they not only beat the Islanders 5-1, but I was a “bobble-head” on the Jumbo-tron! After Christmas I witnessed my 2nd grandson receive the Eagle Scout Award at his troop’s 30th anniversary. They produced 102 Eagles in that time, and 50 of them came back to celebrate! Spent New Year’s Eve with Roger Young’s wife, and we didn’t fall asleep, either!
$ Gary: I AM smiling!!! I’m ALWAYS smiling! My twin grandsons will be one year old next week! I was looking for a truck, and Joe Behson told me to go out Route 7 where they have LOTS of trucks. I drove, and I drove, and I drove, and just before I ran out of gas near Route 22, I saw them! There were white trucks and yellow trucks, and yellow trucks and white trucks, and white trucks and yellow trucks!! I ended up with a school-bus-yellow truck that matches the yellow center stripes. When I told my son it was an automatic, he told me that now I was finally shiftless!!!
$ Pres Bob: Had a great trip to Utah with Joanne, visiting her family. Went to the SUNY Albany vs Utah State basketball game in the packed dome in Salt Lake City. I was the only Albany fan there, and I was quite loud about it, so the TV camera kept coming back on me. And Albany WON, by one point!!! I was afraid to leave until everyone else had gone out. I learned, in my profession, you don’t want anyone at your back!!
DOOR PRIZE, $15 provided by Joe Trupia, won by Pres Bob, who donated it to the Adm Fund!
50/50 for $23 was won by Chris Blais!
MEGA 50/50 now worth $253 defeated Joe Cub, who picked the 6 of Hearts from 37 cards left!
